Question about Brownstones
Does anyone know what the little black, round 'door bell' type buttons are on Brownstones? I see them located around the basement hatch access areas. They are usually mounted on the building directly above the hatch with a wire going down into the basement.

It's a remote used to read the water meter from outside.

I think Rick is correct. The older style was a black plastic box with a trident on the cover. You opened up and there were pins to connect and read the water meter. The new ones are RF and don't need to be connected to read.

They are not original details, no matter what anyone tells you.

maybe it's to summon the butler!

If they are RF, does that mean they are connected to power somewhere?

CMU, the new meters have the RF readers integrated into them. I have that for my electric and gas. Water is still the black plastic "doorbell" looking thing with a wire to the cellar.

Used to read the water meter(s), not to be mistaken with Batmans secret cave bell.
