planter advice needed

Should I be concerned that a planter will get stolen from the front of our brownstone inside the gate? I have noticed every version of planters in the neighborhood including some that are chained and tons that are not. I was thinking something on the heavy side. Any tips? Thanks.

I had one planter stolen in 9 years. they helpfully tipped it over and left behind the dirt and rocks. but other than that, no problems.

I had a hanging planter stolen two years ago. About five years ago, cops popped a balkan gang that was driving around in a truck at 3am, stealing planters and selling them on the street.

Otherwise, it's pretty rare.

I'm in Bed Stuy. They never take the planter, but they always steal the plants!

I live in Bed-Stuy. Last year had 3 trees (7')taken in broad daylight, while I was home. Security camera showed the guy carrying them away one at a time. Also have garbage can chained.....someone tried to cut the chain!

Thanks. I think I will start with something inexpensive and see how it goes.

I have a good fake plastic (inexpensive) planter on my stoop that looks like heavy terra cotta. It hasn't been stolen in 8 years. I don't think I'd ever chain it--so depressing.

Squirrels have done some damage though!

Not for nuthin, this kind of thing is a lot more common with Christmas decorations. A couple of years ago my girlfriend bought me four small, artificial pre-lit trees for my deck over the garage. In mid-December one of them was stolen. On January 2, I found it laying on my stoop. The thief brought it back. Go figger.

I live in Clinton Hill (where rumor has it there's a CRIME WAVE) and have had both a 4' tree ripped out of it's planter and a 6' length of copper drainpipe stolen in the past few months.
It's just depressing as hell to me. Not that I can't live without these items, but the fact that someone would actually come by in dead of night with a screwdriver to pilfer a short length of copper pipe. These are things that I'd like to take for granted. Naive, I know, but there it is.
I'll beat you to it: I should move back to Ohio.

Anyhow, I'd get a heavy planter and somehow secure the plant as well- a cable around the trunk just above the root ball which is then secured to something immovable.

I had some planters in the front of an apartment in williamsburg. Some plants were stolen out of it, but not the planters themselves. Shockingly the person who stole the plant (a beautiful yellow columbine) planted it down the block in the ground. It was bizarre.
Anyway, I did not have the planters chained to anything and they were never taken. good luck and happy planting!
