Hardwood floor recomendation

We are gutting our house and will be putting in all new floors. Can anyone recommend a type of wood? We were looking at bamboo, but have since decided against it, so now we need to start over! Our house will be very modern/urban...not over the top modern, but modern enough. We really want a cool looking floor too!

Seems like you need to go to a showroom and look. Verazzano, lumber liquidators, Premium Floors, or similar. (all have showrooms in Sunset Park/South Slope)

First you need to decide engineered vs. solid wood, then if the latter, pre-finished or finished on the job.

Red oak or white oak are standard choices. Maple is another possibility. Nevertheless, the total number of choices is staggering.

I went to iFloor already...they are nice people...but going to that place is like going to an Apple Store...everyone is trying to be so cool there...its a nice vibe, but I was given wrong info by the store manager which was a complete turn off. ...Plus its a flooring store...not an Apple Store!

We faced the same dilemma a few months ago -- we wanted something new and clean but not overly modern, and most importantly we wanted something really striking (I think a beautiful floor makes a world of difference, at least as important as door/window casings etc.).

Anyway, we decided to go for long planks of rift and quartered white oak, finished in the most flat natural finish water-based poly.

It wasn't cheap -- $7 a foot I think (plus $1.5/SF for finishing) -- but it is absolutely stunning. When people walk in the door it is often the first thing they comment on.

I can send you some pics if it would help, send me an email at brooklynrulz@gmail.com.

Just as the previous poster, we went with quarter sawn white oak-long planks, 5in wide. We ordered it directly from the mill in Indiana for $7 sf for prefinished with low sheen. They haven't been installed yet so not sure about the look but hoping for modern and clean.

I think that very dark or black floors have a more modern feel but for us with a dog and child in a narrow brownstone it just didn't make sense. Wide boards also create a modern feel.

We used Australian Cypress for the landings in our place. With a medium dark stain it looks great and holds up very well.

For homes with pets, children and lots of activity, Mr. Bamboo advises to stay away from the traditional bamboo flooring. Additionally, do not be misled with bamboo veneer products. They do not have the same properties as solid bamboo flooring. Mr. Bamboo offers only solid bamboo flooring – BamStrand™ for nail or glue down applications and the floating, clickable flooring for suspended floors – BamLoc™ .

There are a lot of good species out there. I would stick with hard woods. Personally, I would stay away from pre-finished flooring. I do not like the look of the bevels between planks and I am not sure what happens when they need to get refinished?
