custom or specialty curtain rods?
I am fortunate enough to have some create old wood moldings in my home but one disadvantage is that I am having a hard time finding a curtain rod that can be installed securely and without actually drilling into the molding itself. I've tried the standard places like Smith & Noble, Crate & Barrel, but nothing seems to work.
Anyone aware of a place or person that specializes in the unique requirements of an old brownstone?
thanks in advance.

I was at IKEA yesterday getting some window treatments, and they have an huge assortment of mix and match rods, with curves and bends so you can customize the shape, that can attach to the ceiling, or the wall, or inside a frame, etc. Also they have ceiling "tracks" instead of rods... You might take a look there.

Most rods can be hung from the ceiling if you don't want to drill into your window molding. That said, its not usually a better option since your ceiling is probably more expensive to repair than the molding.

Do you have space between the wooden case moldings and the crown moldings? You might consider hanging the rods above in this space- it can look nice.

I second Park Place--that's a pretty common way to do it and will make your windows appear even more grand.

If I'm reading Park Place and tinarin correctly, you are suggesting affixing the rod to the wall between the top of the window molding and below the crown molding. It's a great idea and one I've examined, but the problem is that the molding above the window forms somewhat of a ledge that comes out at least six inches - and of course your standard curtain rod is not that deep.

Dear budandtoni,
The correct mounting place for most curtain rod installations is on the wall or on the ceiling depending on what kind of look you want and the conditions of your architecture. My company Campbell Ironworks specializes in curtain hardware, we're mostly a to-the-trade resource, but will gladly sell to private individuals, and all the advice you need is absolutely free. We are the manufacturer and can do custom projections and/or back plates.

Hope we can help,
Norman Campbell
