Brooklyn tree nurserys are rip offs
This is un real...went to Chelsea Nursery yesterday and was quoted $450-$550 for various street trees...today I took a trip to Western Mass to see the fam and decided to check out some tree nurserys here....Hmmmm the same Crab apple tree, Japanese Maple, and so on for only $80....same size and everything. I know that we live in a city and all but I am amazed by the markup of the Red Hook nurserys. Im thinking to come up here and take them back in a Uhall!

Does anyone know of any places outside of the city...NY, Long Island...UPSTATE!? Anywhere? The guy at Chelsae openly told me they get the trees from another nursery! Now wonder they are so much!

Have you tried Shannon's on Fort Hamilton Parkway?

Why don't you check out the Brooklyn Terminal Market in Canarsie. I can't say whether the vendors there will match all the species of trees you saw in Western Mass and they probably won't match those really low prices. However, as a wholesale market, the BTM's vendors generally supply stock items to local and other retail centers at wholesale and to the general public at a noticeable discount. Don't go to the BTM expecting to purchase particularly unusual/rare/exotic types of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees. But I know I've seen Japanese Maples and Flowering Crab Apples there(albeit much earlier in the season than now.) You should at least give it a try because the market is big, the selection is large and whatever you find there is likely to be cheaper than at most local nurseries in Brooklyn.
BTW, on a recent visit, I ran into the owner of a local nursery who was making purchases. It was both a bit of surprise and sense of self-satisfaction to be buying flats of flowering plants side by side with him when I could have just as easily gone straight to his shop and paid much more for those same items with his mark up.

Here ya go: http://www.cheapsamsplantbargains.com/
I was there last month. Huge selection (acres of it) and good prices.

The Terminal Market isn't as cheap as it used to be. I always hit it the first warmish day in the spring to buy annuals. This year, the prices were the same as Lowes/HD and I didn't think the quality was any better.

try Glen Summit out in/near Frenchtown.

Gee, Steve, thanks for bursting my "good deal" bubble! LOL. Doesn't matter though, Even if BTM is comparable to Lowes/HD in price, I would still prefer to buy my standard stuff at BTM. There's something about the energy of the wholesale marketplace, what with all the trucks, the movement of workers, the various vendors, etc. that appeals to me a whole lot more than the dreary warehouses of the big box stores with their interminable lines at checkout. I thought the quality was great at BTM at the top of the season. Now, is that "dead" time between spring-early summer and late-summer fall shipments. So quality? Not so much.
Werner, please do tell. Where is Frenchtown?

I went today to Kings County Nurseries on New York Ave and Rutland. Nothing terribly unusual among the selection, but lots in stock for some more common trees and shrubs. Picked up a weeping cherry and a few rhododendrons - less expensive than gowanus and chelsea, etc. Prices closer to Home Depot - and quality is WAY better than HD.

Not sure what size trees you were looking for, but it's always best to use a landscaper to do the actual plantings since they will often guarantee the planting. I have a few landscaper friends that usually do the planting for me & other friends (1st time homebuyers) and they use a nursery out east that delivers straight to the job, most nurseries will do this for you (at a cost).
