Wood Pest Prevention

I'm redoing the roof of a small extension and was wondering if there's any DIY treatments I can apply to the beams and boards before installing them that will discourage pests at eat or otherwise destroy wood. (Note, we had a termite inspection a year ago that found historical issues, but nothing current.) Thanks!

The only anti-termite paint I've heard about is called Protim Solignum. It comes as either a spray-on preservative or a paint. It's used on in-situ construction for very humid climates. I think it's made in England or Ireland but I've never seen it for sale here. You might Google for a paint supplier down in alligator country and ask what they recommend.

I've read in several sources that a coating of a BORAX solution will do the trick - and it's environmentally friendly!

I would use borate. you mix it 1 to 1 with water and spray it on. it works for termites and is said to be non toxic.

I've used this stuff before and it's amazing...http://www.pestproducts.com/timbor.htm

Timbor is cheap and easy to use - make sure you follow the directions carefully, and be absolutely sure that the wood dries out completely after application before you seal up the interior walls. DO NOT use this stuff on exterior wood or wood that will come into contact with water.

FYI - termites love new wood - it's like filet mignon to them, so it's a smart idea to treat it, especially if you've seen past evidence of termites.
