window bars vs fire dept. window gates

We are buying a condo at the ground level and want to install ironwork for security. The building management told us that we need to use fire dept. approved gates (which we think are ugly). However, the building has a sprinkler system and there are two means of egress to the apt. Does anyone know what the rules are on this?

Do what you want? If you think you will get out in case of a fire then for you it's OK. If the FDNY finds fault AFTER the fire and your insurance claim is disallowed what do you care, you're alive. Your intent is to keep out intruders, not to keep you in, right?

check here: www.fdnyfirezone.org/download/apartment_fire_safety-en.pdf

from what it says, your primary exit is your door, but the other should be an escape exit with a different route. for instance your building can have sprinklers and 2 doors but if the fire is in the hallway and both doors open into the same place, it won't do you much good. But check around because there may be nicer looking gates. the fire approval has to do with how the gates open (no padlocks or keys allowed), not the actual style.
