The last straw in Sunset Park
I've had it with Sunset Park. This morning was the last straw. My dogs were in in my backyard playing while I was getting ready for work. I happened to look out the window and see my neighbor who lives at the rooming house next door throw something into my yard. One of my dogs gobbles it up. I have no idea if it was drugs, poison or food, but now I have to take the day off work to observe my dogs to make sure they're ok.
I've had my tires slashed, my car keyed, seen a ton of drug deals, had fights over parking spaces, fights over loud music. More sanitation tickets than I can count over garbage that others threw in front of my house. Last Sunday, I had a man on a bicycle follow me while I walked my dogs and he was saying all sorts of crude things to me to the point where I had to call the cops to get him to leave me alone.
I've been here seven years and it's not getting any better.

bummer. what section of sp are you in?
there are times when it just makes sense to throw in the towel for an upgrade in quality of life somewhere else.
or maybe rent out your place for a few years while you chill out in a better neighborhood.

WOW...sorry to hear all of this. That kind of stuff doesn't happen around my area of Bed Stuy. It's quiet and neighbors are friendly.
I'm going to make an assumption that you are renting currently. What would be your budget for monthly rent?? Not sure how many landlords will allow a couple of dogs to have the run of the yard though.
I would certainly offer to show you around the neighborhood some evening...It's the A train to Utica Ave stop and that train usually takes 12-15 minutes to get to Manhattan.....assuming that's where you work; which also may be wrong.

Call the cops NOW on the neighbor. Do not wait until you see if whatever it was harms your dog. I'd have the my dog in to the vet immediately, but I know many people avoid paying vet fees unless their animal is seriously ill.
How early in the morning ddi you have the dogs outside? Do they bark when they're out there?

I feel for you for all the crap you've been put through but why would you think the dude threw drugs out of his window? Most people who buy drugs do so for their personal consumption, not so they can throw them out the window. Unless the police were raiding his apartment at the time you have nothing to worry about on that front. I also doubt he'd throw poison out the window unless your dog is a barker and he's gotten annoyed.
I think what's much more likely is that he was eating and just threw some food scraps out his window and your dog had a little treat.

I'm really sorry to hear about your troubles. Whether you rent or own (I will make no assumptions) finding a new place that will take your dogs is a challenge (I've been in the same boat before). If your dog ate poison or drugs, you most likely would have seen an immediate response. Most likely, your neighbor threw food or trash, and your pooch will be fine. Until you can figure out what next move to make, you may want to supervise your dogs in the yard from now on.

Why dont you just move 20 blocks up to Bay Ridge...? You will only be 1 or 2 train stops back and you wont have to deal with that class of people.

Dave, you're rude obnoxious and pretentious. I'm shocked no one has punched you in the face yet.
Posted by: moreteasir at June 26, 2008 3:03 PM
WTF is your problem moreteasir? The OP made it abundantly clear that he/she wanted to move and I offered him/her help in looking at another neighborhood.
Get off your high horse and maybe add something for a change...but that's not really like you, is it??
I think its actually you who is rude, obnoxious and pretentious and probably have already been punched in the face.

so sorry to hear this. sounds like a nightmare. seems like some of the residents have it out for you.
find a better place to live..........
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 3:35 PM
SEVEN YEARS and it's not getting any better? Um, gee, I dunno, maybe you should, I don't know, maybe consider thinking about moving? Not to rush you into anything, though. Maybe mull it over another 2 or 3 years.

I would like to know which part of Sunset Park youre in.....

I agree with reporting the incident. It doesn't matter what your "neighbor" threw into the yard; it's wrong. I'm also curious about which part of SP you live in. I've never had to deal with the problems you've had and I've lived here just over six years.
I hope your dogs are doing fine.

Sunset park smells.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 4:30 PM
relax...breath...your dog will be fine...
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 4:32 PM
In January you posted that you would be selling soon anyway...what happened????

Sunset park smells.

Sunset park stinks.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 4:39 PM
Sunset shit.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 4:44 PM
Move up to Greenwood Heights- it's north of Sunset Park and much more gentrified.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 6:06 PM
Greenwood Heights is Sunset Park.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 6:12 PM
Greenwood Heights is not Sunset Park.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 6:15 PM
South Slope below 15th Street is Sunset Park.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 6:17 PM
I have lived in Greenwood for 30 years. The area around the cemetery has always been known as Greenwood Heights, be it officially or not. It is it's own neighborhood, with it's own vibe. Love all the new condos. Heard Starbucks is looking at Greenwood...

"I would like to know which part of Sunset Park youre in.....
Posted by: slick at June 26, 2008 3:40 PM"
hmmm. let me guess. the latino part?
this is why sunset park sucks.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 7:00 PM
Exactly. Tell me the difference between Park Slope and Sunset Park and that is why Sunset Park is the way it is.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 7:04 PM
you could always move to Kensington, as cheap but much better area.
Posted by: armchairwarrior at June 26, 2008 7:25 PM
the asian part is pretty cool.
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 7:46 PM
Everyone knows Sunset Park is like this. Boo hoo. What did you expect, you move there and gentrification would follow your every step?
Posted by: guest at June 26, 2008 8:01 PM
were you on the asian side or hispanic side?
Posted by: armchairwarrior at June 26, 2008 8:09 PM
I've been in Sunset Park for the last 10 years. Sure it's no Park Slope but I like it, it works for me. Some blocks are great and some are not. This is true with most areas in Brooklyn. If it doesn't work for you I would say, move. I'm sorry to hear that your block isn't working for you but it's not the case for all of Sunset Park. I'm on a great block with lots of new homeowners and no SRO's. I remember living in Fort Green in the 80's when "Crack was Wack". Your problem is small by comparison.

What Rick said. Signed: going on 4 years and happy so far.
Posted by: saturdayrenogirl at June 27, 2008 1:03 AM
Another What Rick Said - going on 6 years in Sunset Park.
Comments about the latino part are ignorant. I live in what would be considered the latino part and my neighbors are Puerto Rican, Dominican, Italian, Philipino, Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, Polish, mixed European and who knows what else. There are some nasty, filthy, drunk, and/or substance abusing individuals in the neighborhood and many of them are latino, but if I were to generalize about latinos in the neighborhood, I would say warm and family oriented captures nearly all and the negative stereotypes relatively few.
The neighborhood isn't perfect, but compares favorably to what "nice" and "white" neighborhoods were like when I lived in them in the 70's and 80's.

Critter52,
I can relate, but have just the opposite problem. Thirteen years ago, I moved to working-class/working artists community which over the past five years has become overrun by self-involved hipsters and trust funders.
Fed up with the scene, we decided to move to Vermont, but we're keeping the house as a golden parachute. Ironically, the kidults we abhor pay top rent!
Posted by: guest at June 27, 2008 11:51 AM
It's all getting better.
Posted by: guest at June 27, 2008 2:02 PM
Add me to the Rick camp.
Thirteen years in the "Hispanic" area (with the nice blocks of brick row houses and street trees and the ability to find parking on my own block). The area is improving all the time. Unfortunately, there are always some idiot males wherever you live, but I raised two girls here and they are fine. IMO the harassment levels are not much worse what I experienced as a teen female in the 1970's.
MUCH safer here and now than living in PS in the 1980's.
