Sod

Does anyone know of a reputable place in Brooklyn where I can purchase sod for my backyard other than Home Depot or Lowe's? The reason why I'm excluding HD & Lowes, is because they don't take very good care of their greenery and sod has to be laid out pretty quickly. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!!!

Try Shannon Florists and Nursery on Fort Hamilton Parkway. They sell sod and I believe that they can help with the installation.

faithful - totally out of context: last year you said you wanted to have your house on the house tour. If you still do, please email me with contact info. montrosemorris at yahoo dot com.

There's a brutal 4 day heatwave forecast. You might not want to get this done this weekend. If you find some next week you might want to ask where the sod was during this heatwave too.

yeah you're right about the heat wave. I'm basically just prepping the soil for the sod. I picked a heck of weekend. I plan on ordering the sod next week, but I'll be sure to ask were the sod was during the heat wave. I've contacted Kings County Nurseries on New York Ave. Has anyone ever purchased sod from them? Lisa was very informative, but I want shop around. Any experiences with Shannon?

M.M. -- I will have to get back to you regarding the housetour. I'm still thinking about it.

We purchased sod from Shannon's, and had them do the grading and installing as well. They were very good, and grass still looks quite good a year later. We had previously purchased sod from a local place, and they did a horrible installation, didn't have a clue. Anyway, I'd recommend Shannon's for anything because they know their stuff and have a long-term reputation to uphold. Probably not the cheapest, however, but worth it, I think.

If you get your sod at HD or Lowes the day it's delivered, you'll be fine. Call and ask them when they're expecting the next shipment.

We bought some sod earlier from a Lowes in Jersey outside Philadelphia and it looks great. But we didn't get enough, so we bought the rest from Shannon's. It, unfortunately, is dying, with strange spreading dead zones. Maybe it was just a bad batch. (Also the dirt in the sod was really rocky, as opposed to the satisfying rich soil from Lowes).
