siding contractor

We are looking for recommendations for someone to side our wood frame house. It is currently covered in asphalt shingles, and we would like to get prices on just removing the shingles and restoring the original clapboard, or taking the house down to the studs and insulating and re-siding with new wood. We've looked through the archives but haven't had that much luck so far. Many thanks.

People seem to use T and A carpentry a lot. They quoted me a very high price- I haven't used them yet, but their work does seem pretty nice. They were going pull out all the siding, put up tyvek, replace the surface with clapboard or cedar shake, and pu the front porch back on my place.

T & A Carpentry seem to be the only game in town. They quoted us $30,000 for the front of our 3-story frame house 2 years ago, so I am sure prices have gone up by now. That was to do everything -remove asphalt shingles, insulate between the studs, cover with Tyvek, and put up clapboard or hardiplank. They charge extra for any details, mouldings, porches, etc.

Some general contractors may also do this type of work. We know people who had their facade restored (in a historic district) by Larry Burda, also incredibly expensive : (

I don't know any contractor to recommend for the job but I would recommend walking around and seeing where this has been done.
For example - on Bergen st between Court and Smith - several were redone. They look great but couple are already showing major signs of paint peeling from new board.
On Baltic between Smith and Court - couple have done instead of wood clapboard they used cement board which I think is great product and will wear better than the wood
and difficult to tell the difference by look.

It will cost you big bucks to do wood siding. And you have to paint it all the time.
Have you checked out Hardie Plank? http://www.jameshardie.com/
When I was in Lowes the other day they had a display of it. A while ago they didn't seem to sell it in the North East.

Another to check out is on Sackett between Smith and Court.

Call Kamal from KM Construction. He did a wood siding project for me and the final product was great. He will give you houses he has done in the past for references. Tell him Bill sent you. His number is 917-912-8636.

We used T&A to install cement clapboard siding a few years ago, with beautiful, but by no means cheap, results (we had fiberglass over 4 layers of asphalt, over particleboard, over the original dutch clapboard). Oversight of the crew can be a problem, as Arthur (A) is often off site. And if things lag, talk to his wife (T) in the office. She makes him jump.

FWIW, my understanding of NYC building codes is replacing wood clapboard in a non-historical district is a no-no. Once it's removed, it can't go back up. It needs to be a fire-resistant material, like the Hardi products. Can anyone confirm?

There is a house on Westminster btwn Cortelyou and Dorchester (not part of the historic district) that they stripped off all the asphalt shingles, exposed really weathered wood clapboard and shingles and then painted them. The siding looks OK now, but they seem to be working on this house at a snails pace.
