Looking to buy a tree

I am looking to buy a tree to plant in back yard in Brooklyn. Any recommendations on a good garden center?

Gowanus Nursery on Summit St in Red Hook/ "Carrol Gardens West"/ "Columbia Waterfront District. They have a very wide selection and everything is healthy.

I've found that Red Hook nurseries like the Chelsea Nursery have excellent selections, but their prices are on the high side. But it's worth a trip down there to browse and identify what you like, because their stock is vast and of good quality. My neighbors and me went to the Kings County Nursery to actually buy what we wanted. Anything we wanted that KCN didn't have they were willing to order (on the proviso it's in season.)

Check out the Brooklyn Terminal Marekt (Lepide's). Someone on this site recommended them. Good selection and 25% off of retail prices for shrubs and trees

Chelsea and the new version of that one on the pier are definitely expensive; I have found Gowanus to be less so. If you can get out to Long Island you would save a bundle....

Kings County Nursery on New York Ave and Rutland, just outside of PLG, has a large stock and they do have trees. You can hire them to deliver and plant the tree for you too. For decent prices.

On Long Island I like Dee's in Oceanside. Lots of trees, wide selection, and all sizes. For a price you can get a pretty large tree.

Yes, BTM has a small but decent selection and low prices..

The other places that posters have mentioned have a much larger selection but also much higher prices.

Last month I helped a friend pick up a bunch of trees and shrubs at a place called Cheap Sam's Plant Bargains in Holtsville, Long Island. Their inventory and selection is so large that it covers several acres so you drive through the nursery and stop when you see something interesting.

I picked up a cool bush I'd never seen before: a dappled willow for $17.

If you are still looking for a nursery, Hicks (large, well-stocked, somewhat pricey) in Westbury, Long Island is running a 50% sale June 26-29. They have a wonderful, diverse selection and knowledgeable staff. Also, for more input and information, see the Brownstoner Forum post sometime in April about flowering trees. If you call Hicks, ask about bringing a soil sample. Hicks Nurseries, Phone: 516-334-0066, http://www.hicksnurseries.com/
