Getting Rid of Old Chemicals
Could anyone advise on how to properly dispose of old chemicals such as garden pesticide, paint thinner, miscellaneous small cans of stuff that seems wrong to throw in trash? Thanks
Comments
The correct way to deal with most of that stuff (ie paint thinner) is to evaporate the liquid and throw the container in the garbage.
If it doesn't evaporate when you pour it into a shallow container, then call 311 and ask how to dispose of it. They can tell you how exactly to dispose of anything.

either burn it or dig a hole in your neighbors yard and chuck it in dhereee.

You can check the Dept of Sanitation website, and it posts recommendations and/or instructions on disposing of hazardous household materials.

I've been dumping that kind of crap in the Gowanus for years.

Brooklynative: So your dumpings are the reason that I found a 7 legged frog and a 2 headed fish in the Gowanus.

Sanitation has a way to dispose of most of that stuff. I, unfortunately, have a quart of gasoline left by our house's previous owner. Apparently, I have to take it out to some toxic waste disposal company in Jersey. Of course, these days I might be able to sell it for 85 cents to a desperate SVU owner.

The best way to get rid of old gasoline is to burn it, preferably in a controlled way in an engine. But be careful. Old gasoline can hurt an engine.
I would put it in an old lawnmower. Or give it to one of those kids on an illegal death-scooter.
