Cover for Fireplace

The fireplaces in the building where I live all have a forced air system that is the heat source. As a result it sound travels through the shoot so I can hear my upstairs and downstairs neighbor's conversations, TVs, sneezes etc. Is there anything out there that is a buffer/cover that can be used when the heat isn't on? I end up laying a dense pillow over the iron grate with a chair holding it up. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've been thinking I need to just make something that can fit over the grate as a sound buffer.

I use these:

They are magnetic sheets that cover the vents, and you can cut them to fit.

The sheets don't work well if there are many layers of paint. You have to strip them off.

If you can get a magnet to attach to the grate - those sheets will work. Before you go to the trouble of stripping paint - test out using any magnet.
