aj mandison, pc richards or sears

I'm planning to buy a fridge spending around 1k-1.5K given the model I want.

Any opinions on AJ Madison or PC Richards? Any bad experiences?

I trust sears, but they are charging around 200 more. thanks.

PC Richards. PC Richards in Astoria. I got all my appliances there. A guy named Mohamed helped me a lot -- he is an extremely knowledgeable person, very helpful.
I hope he is still there. That was a couple of years ago. But they have a great showroom there. Service and after purchase service is excellent.

I find you can get a better deal by negotiating with the sales people - either PC Richards or Sears will give you a better price than the sticker. Just come armed with what a good price is.

J&R in Park Slope will beat any of their prices. We ended up buying all our appliances through them. Nice to support the little guy.

PC Richards sucks. An example of what certain minorities have to put up with in this town.

I went in there (4th Ave) a year ago to buy a cheap TV for my wife's room. Mofos are trained to put your address in and meanwhile the computer looks you up to see what your credit is. Mine popped up 'you have been approved for an 8k credit line'.

Mofo cashier is told he can't sell me a $250 TV without me jumping for joy and screaming 'praise the Lord, sign me up for a 50" widescreen and charge it'.

I didn't lace into cashier kid who was doing what he was trained to do, but I was not allowed to buy my TV until some supervisor showed up and I got to tell him to go F himself and let me out. Scumbags ripping off people. Ghetto. No more for me.

Here's one of the first things I learned when I moved to south Brooklyn. If you're buying a large appliance you call Harry's: (718) 236-3507

He's an independent contractor who works through PC Richards but will sell you the same appliance for a lot less. I saved $400 buying my GE Profile fridge through Harry's. The appliance will be delivered in a PC Richards truck and will be installed by PC Richards techs.

No shill. Go to PC Richards, find something you like, get a price and model #. Then call Harry's with the model #.

I bought my stove, microwave, fridge, washer, dryer and two window A/Cs through Harry's. No problems.

Harry's is the place. Several people have told me that. I wish I had known before...

I went with Sears last year for a refrigerator and dishwasher...because i trusted them, i could order online, and i was supposed to get a discount for buying 2 appliances...and it was the worst experience. Delivery problems, installation problems, i didn't get the discount. After 2 months and missing 4 days of work, I finally had a working refrigerator and a broken dishwasher (I didn't break it - it just simply never worked!). When I decided to give up and buy my dishwasher elsewhere - they told me I'd have to pay a restocking fee! For a dishwasher that never worked!Took 4 months to straighten it out.

I ended up filing complaints with BBB and sent letters to every person in the company I could. Posted on several "I hate Sears" blogs too. Also had a friend who lives in Michigan who had a similar experience --- took er 6 months and 3 different refrigertors to get one that wasnt damaged and Sears was very rude to her too.

AJ Madison is a high pressure internet sales operation. They have a showroom, but when my wife and I went there a few months ago none of the salespeople would leave their computer to help us--we left and went to EBA, on Nostrand Avenue, which I highly recommend.

Do the research in advance, and know what you want. Don't rely on salespeople to help you decide what to buy. I never would. They're ALL pushy salespeople at appliance stores, and not always very informed about their products. For me it's only about warrantees, selection, ease of getting somebody on the phone, how much is in stock and how quickly it's available.

I ordered from AJ Madison online and was happy with them. Everything delivered quickly.

I will never set foot in a PC Richards ever again. Bad, sparse selection and SO rude! I have been to 2 different locations and both were the same in this respect, the salesmen were a55holes. I felt like asking them "are you trying to drive people away or trying to sell something?" Because 5 minutes with them and I didn't want to buy a dang thing. So I didn't. Buh bye.

PCR is staffed by idots and will rip you off if you let them or give you a fair price if you bargain, but why deal with it? J&R on 7TH will hook you up with anything you need. Always come with the price that you should pay, research it online.

I have found PC Richards to be OK, though my experience varies considerably. One time it was a high pressure type thing, another a really informed, good guy, another time nobody seemed to be around. This was at the Atlantic Ave. place. I have dealt with Harry's as well, and they seemed great - but they are way out in Bensonhurst and they don't have a website that I know of. I'm thinking of buying something from AJ Madison online currently, but haven't done it yet.

Have bought at both PCR and AJM. Thanks to the Internet you can tell what a good price is for the appliance you want. After that, it's all about what's in stock, how soon you need it etc. You can educate yourself on the web.

Frankly, unless you're going high-end, it really doesn't matter where you buy from, so long as it's an established operation.

Check Drimmers in Brooklyn. Cheapest around, decent help. The one downside is their delivery guys were complete d-bags (missed a day of work - 4 hours late, no call).

Call Dial-a-Brand.
They are reliable and deliver the next day. Your old appliance can be removed as well.
They will take a personal check or a credit card.

Just have the manufacturer and the model number and they will give you the price.
they deliver everywhere from long Island.

I have bought flat screens, washer/dryer, ACs from PC Richards on 4th Ave. Mickey is older guy (former Wall Streeter) who is very helpful, knowledgeable and does his best to find or look ahead for best prices.

He is stationed in TV area but can sell anything in the store, and of course they will beat any competitor's prices.

He also hooked me up with a man with a van to delivery stuff for nearly nothing.

I recently purchased fridge and dishwasher from AJ Madison, We wandered into the showroom, looking for a stove brand they carry but did not have on display, got pretty decent help, and was able to walk out without any promises, etc.

I called some weeks later, they checked stock, gave me prices, 'did a little better', qualified for free delivery, got a commitment, actually opened a 'billme later' account and was done.

I received the items when promised, the fridge works (fisher paykel ~1.5) the dishwasher will not be tested for a while, but it was moderate (bosch ~600) so hopefully that will be ok.

No pressure, no extended warranty, no upsell, no haggles, no hidden charges.

as someone said - unless you are going high end, all these guys are pretty much the same, your tolerance for spiel and spin will be the critical element.

my wife and i also went in with requirements and some knowledge: fridge MUST fit in 'this' space, dishwasher does NOT need 8 cycles, etc.

good luck!

ps - you will find plenty of complaints about everyone. PCRichards is where my parents and my friends parents bought appliances...so you know how that goes...

i just bought range dishwasher and laundry center.

i looked online until i found the make/models i wanted.

then i compared prices online (including delivery + tax) using google, dealtime, and pricegrabber.

then i ordered from the cheapest place.

For the laundry center Sears and Pc Richard both had the exact same price (after delivery) and Sears gave a delivery estimate of over a week while Pc Richard refused to give any kind of delivery estimate until after i payed and had an order #. I found that a website called Rainbowappliance had a lower price for this particular laundry center and took a chance with them, what the hell Sears and Pc Richards hadn't impressed me. I clicked submit order online and in less than 24 hours i had a call that the guy was 5 minutes from my house with it! I was surprised and scrambled to find a place to put it.

For the dishwasher i found the lowest advertised price on ajmadison (which also had probably the best website because easy to sort all the models in many different ways)I clicked submitorder online and the dishwasher arrived in less than 48 hours to my house, this time i wasn't as cuaght off guard by the delivery.

i ordered the range from a small outfit callled ffemax, it hasn't shipped and when i called about it, they were defensive and had no info. Too bad because i need to make tea on it more than i need the dishwasher (i like doing it by hand) or the laundry (laundry place 1 block away)

update: ffemax stove they just called me its coming so it took about 48 hours to get here, all worked out very fast, pretty surprising since i just went online and clicked buy at all these websites and didn't leave the house or speak to any humans and all the shipments came super fast, think it helped that the places i ordered from happened to be in NY (as far as i know)
