AC Units
Hi
Not exactly a brownstone topic per se, but nevertheless, perhaps there is somebody out there who knows this: what is the current NYC law concerning installation of window AC units in coop buildings? My board is trying to comply, but nobody knows exactly what the law says. what does "professional" installation mean? I have called 311, they could not help, the DOB is impossible to reach, and on the nyc.gov site I found no real answer....anyone?

Air Wave Air Conditioning can help with installation. They have a program where, at the end of the season, they will pick up your units, completely overhaul them, store them in their storage facility, and deliver and install in the spring. They provide liability insurance. http://www.airwaveac.com. I'm not affiliated, they just do a great job.

there are no DOB requirements regarding WINDOW AC units that you need to comply with.
Just open window, put AC in. Plug unit in, and suck up energy.
Thru-wall units are a different story. That you'll need to file.

By "professional" they probably mean licensed HVAC and, more importantly, bonded/insured in case they drop a Fedders on someone's head.

I put the AC in our window in the spring and take it out in the fall, and I'm not a licensed anything.
Open the window and stick the unit in. What are you people idiots.

Good lord, everyone wants to claim to be a 'professional' these days. It used to be medicine, law, and prostitution were the only professions - everything else is just a job.

The FDNY was inspecting our co-op last year and they said that al window A/Cs need to be bracketed for extra support. There was no mention of a professional instalation.
