abandoned buildings on 17th street

What's the deal with a large abandoned building on the north side of 17th street close to 7th avenue?

Anyway, I think that is where it is - I quickly passed it yesterday evening and am now curious. It is brick and about 4 stories high and is next to another seemingly abandoned small building and another home that is currently being renovated.

Big building in the middle of the block? It's been that way for at least 10 years and likely many more. The word on the block was that there is a lien on the property which makes the combined cost of tear down + lien more than outweigh the potential value of the property. Too bad because it is an eyesore, a danger, and a breeding ground for pigeons and mice.

Big building in the middle of the block... it has been vacant and padlocked for 25 years
that I know of... a few years back I was walking by the place with my dog on a leash, and the next thing that happened, a large growling dog pushed his way out of that four story pigeon coop and attacked my dog... managed to fend the attacking dog off, but my heart almost stopped... since then, I always walk on the other side of the street.

A few months back, I saw a few people inspecting the building, was hoping just maybe something good might be in the works for that location.

meant to add, there's a man living by himself in the other house that appears to be abandoned... he has been there forever.

Anyone else notice the new cracks on the side facade? The front layer of bricks seems like it's about to separate from the building. Meant to call 311 but forgot. Looks like a job for HPD demo contractors. Does this building have a back any more?
