You Can Stop Lawn Litter

You Can Stop Lawn Litter

There's a web site where you can register to stop all lawn litter fliers and advertising the distributors throw in your yard.

See http://www.stoplawnlitter.org/

The new stop lawn-litter law became effective on January 1st.

I've already registered my home. It was easy and it's completely free.

...and completely useless!

I'm going to be just as brave as the last guy and comment as a guest. I went to the website in Mark F's post. It seems like a good service and I registered my home. Personally, I hate the fact that anyone can dump their paper on my stoop. To me it's the same as a beer can or pile from a dog. Why is it OK?? I've never understood it, but finally it seems we can stop it. I say that I lose nothing by trying. I think the post above mine is what's useless...or at least defeatist.

Oh boy, you get a sign too! I don't see how this is going to work. The city as a whole would have to pass a law and I don't see how that will ever happen.

8:59: defeatist? Instead of complaining about the right of flyer distributers which has been upheld in court or registering on some useless website that will not prevent any flyering at all, just hire someone to sweep your sidewalk twice a day. Do something instead of complaining or wishing for some magic solution. Don't think it's fair to have to pay someone to clean up someone else's trash? That's life, deal with it.

the city does not have to pass a law, the state already did. The site says the law was passed last year and is now active.

i googled it and found this page from Senator frank padavan's website:

http://www.frankpadavan.com/11/news/08-02-04/governor_signs_padavan_s_lawn_litter_implementing_legislation_into_law.aspx

it seems like the flyer guys don't have the right to do this after all.

The Park Slope Civic C. printed up signs that are available for free along 7th Ave. Consensus is they have mixed effectiveness: some distributers respect the sign and pass you by, others toss things in regardless. Like the website registration - there is no enforcement. Until there is a way to effectivly fine solicitors....not much to do. Many neighbors are collecting all the papers and 1)sending them off to the Civic C, 2) dumping them in the street trash bins so the city has to deal with all the recyling of paper and/or 3) actually mailing it back to the solicitor.

11:08 that law is being contested and is not enforced so good luck with that

Many restaurants and bars did not pay attention to the no smoking laws when they were first passed.

Then a couple of places got hit with $10-20-30,000 fines and everyone began complying.

Same thing with lawn litter. The fines apply to the advertisers as well as the distributors and the enlties are per piece of litter! They'll all start abiding the law after Circuit City or another big retailer gets hit with $25,000 in fines.

Just hang in, Rome wasn't built in a day. I suggest you get as many of your neighbors as possible to sign up at StopLawnLitter.org.

The more the better because if it looks like no one cares, nothing will change.

Also the sign from StopLawnLitter.org is self-adhering and waterproof, which beats the paper and scoth tape versions a few other people are handing out.
