Small Bathroom Repair Estimate & Recommendations
Hi
I need to do some repair work on my rental unit's bathroom (I am not really looking at high-end tile ... basic white subway tile)
essentially it would be to remove the existing tile around the tub, fix and insulate the plumbing in the wall, retile and install new hardware.
This is all just in the tub area the rest of the bathroom is fine.
Would love any recommendations of someone reliable and solid to get the job done. Any idea of how much something like this should cost would be great as well.
while i'm at it, the shower area has about a foot drop-ceiling in it making it annoying for my rather tall tenant to shower ... any hints as to what may be going on in there and why it would be there? the bathroom is part of a single-storey extention that has some sort of exhaust looking pipe coming out of it ...
thanks!

Total guess - but perhaps the drop ceiling contains the plumbing for the bathroom. If the extension is built directly on a concrete slab, running pipes through the ceiling would make sense. The pipe that you see coming out is probably the plumbing vent.

A drop ceiling of this type (generally called a soffit) is common in shower enclosures and often contains ductwork for the exhaust fan or as 9:50 points out could contain some plumbing supply lines. It could have also been built to accomodate the correct height for a glass shower door or other accessory long since removed. If you've got someone in there working it wouldn't be too hard of a thing to open it up and take a look.

Without seeing the bathroom it's tough to give an estimate. But Andrei (independent contractor) did some great work for us at a really reasonable price. 718-710-8214

Dexter Phillip (taylormadecontractors.com) did my bathroom reno for $8K or so, but I don't know how much just the tub surround part of the job cost. He and his team are great (they do renos for Oprah magazine stories.)
