Radiator pipe opening

Hello Brownstoner,

I am adding a kitchen to our ground floor apartment. Currently the radiator was removed by the previous owner and I want to reinstall it however having the pipe opening facing left versus right so that the radiator will be switched to the other side of the pipe.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is an easy fix or requires an new pipes? Cost?

Thanks for everyone's help in advance

Sounds like an easy fix to me. When you say "opening" you're talking about the steam vent, right? Anyway, it may be as simple as turning your shut off valve so it faces the other direction. All you need is a good pipe wrench, ( or two ). One two turn the valve and the other to hold the pipe in place. If you need a plumber to make a house call, expect to pay $300.

In my experience, simple in theory but very hard in practice; the valve might require considerable force to free up. I've seen plumbers use a hammer on the wrench. So you have to have a good feel for the amount of abuse the pipe will take. Also remember the radiator has to be slightly pitched towards the valve.

I say pay the money. Should be $150-300 (lower if you find a plumber not with a company), including re-attaching the radiator (no easy feat in itself.)

Thank you so much for your response. I will definitely have a plumber do it as I have no/very little upper body strenght.

Cheers

better than using a hammer on a wrench is to extend a wrench using a piece of pipe (handle of wrench goes inside pipe). Perhaps you have a friend who can help you with the heavy lifting? It can be fun to learn how to fix things in your house.
