One Local Summer
Anyone else doing OLS? The idea is to create one meal a week that is made up of locally grown products. I'm putting together a map of stores that sell locally grown products so please let me know if you know of any.

This sounds very interesting! Is there more information on it?

Freshdirect has a whole section of local suppliers. Includes meat/fish/dairy in addition to just fruit and vegetables. Obviously there's also the farmers markets - few of those people traveling over 100 mi.

Biercraft has a whole case of NY state beers and I've seen some local cheeses there as well.
Fairway also has some local stuff

Biercraft also makes those amazing ice cream sandwiches right there in the store. I'd like to have one of those for dinner every week.

Local summer produce is great. What do you do in the winter?

Summer and fall are much easier given our climate in the north east. The easiest way to see what to eat in the dead of winter is go to a restaurant that serves only locally grown seasonal products. My favorite is Blue Hill off of Washington Sq. Park but its a pricey meal.
The meats don't change much but there is an increase in whole wheat grains, dark greens like kale, beans, and a range of pickled and preserved jams. Other things like root vegetables and apples keep well.

oh, come on. this is really a fairly ridiculous idea. i mean, what's the definition of "locally grown"? are people growing produce and raising chickens in their backyards in brooklyn? and nobody's growing wheat around here, 6:35. much better, imho, to eat available supermarket stuff on 'ols' day and send the money you save to your local food bank.

Actually yes! People ARE growing basil on their windowsills and produce in their backyards, selling them at Community markets (I visited a couple of really great one last September in east New York, Crown Heights, one run by residents of a mental institution near Kingsbourough Hospital). People also raise chickens and honey bees in Brooklyn. Check the website of Just Food at justfood.org and if you dig deep you'll find some of those locations. And keep us informed with the progress, great idea!
