Custom Front Doors
I need recommendations for people who do custom jobs on front doors. We need to have them built to match our neighbors. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

We picked up a postcard from southslope woodworkers on the Fort Greene house tour this weekend. They were the ones that made the doors and moldings on South Oxford (all painted white). The owner recommended them very highly.

Have you tried the salvage route first? If your neighbor's doors are original, you may be able to find the same.

I highly recommend against South Slope Woodworks. He's an unprofessional jerk who took a 50% deposit at the start of the small job I commissioned, totally screwed it up and left me hanging. I believe his attitude was that my job wasn't big enough to deserve competent craftsmanship. Then why take it and my money? I am committed to ringing the warning bells each and every time he starts a thread or answers a post here in order to advertise himself. Beware of this company! There are plenty of other good woodworkers out there. Just search the archives.

Google Jim Illingsworth in upstate NY. his work is fantastic and about half what you would pay in NYC. Plus competent. Tell him Bruce from Kane St sent you.

contrary to previous poster, i highly recommend nathan at south slope woodworks. extremely professional, personable and will do the work he says he will at the price quoted. sounds to me like somebody has an ax to grind.
dcl, not connected to or employed by south slope woodworks.

Nathan at south slope woodworks replicated a pair of entry doors to our rowhouse that matched the original doors of our neighbors on both sides. He measured them and created the exact profile. He is the most knowledgable person I know about brownstone and rowhouse doors and any woodwork. Very professional.

Just remember these are custom made by hand, and not cheap. but amazing...

Guess what Nathan, I will continue to warn this Forum about you no matter what. Even when you hijack my name to falsely register yourself on this forum.
If you were a real professional, you would have either corrected the horrible, botched job you did on the one lousy base cabinet I commissioned from you or you would have returned the deposit I paid you. After all, you delivered the product months late and out of spec. In addition, although I asked for recessed panel doors to match existing cabinetry, you produced a cabinet with shaker doors instead! You promised to finish the door in BM paint. Instead you only primed it. Then, you sent an installer who badmouthed you the whole time he was here about what a mess of a business you were running. And, of course,he installed the cabinet incorrectly. Then, when you came to inspect the work onsite, you admitted the job was totally botched. However, after that, you walked away, disclaiming any responsibility for this total woodworking disaster. On a simple project.
But now, you have gone over the line by hijacking my identity.
Listen folk -- the repeat post to this thread is another botched fabrication of Nathan Shellkopf. Like most here, I have never posted to Forum, using my real name. However Nathan Shellkopf has now chosen to enter the realm of identity theft by registering and posting under my name. Only the good Lord (and other dissastisfied customers) knows what depths he will descend to. All I will say is: buyer beware and stay clear of South Slope Woodworks!
