Original metal safe

My brownstone has a metal safe that is original to the house. It is on wheels and I will have it built into new cabinets. It was built into a closet that was not original to the house. It is a cool looking old safe, but the finish needs cleaning. I tried googling "cleaning antique metal safe" and similar, but no luck. It doesn't seem painted, but surface is sort of pitted. I don't know what category to put this in, on forum, sorry. Any suggestions how to have this cleaned or even find info re: old safes?

Well, since no experts answered you... I'd probably use fine steel wool and a standard cleaning compound to clean up the steel. Then I'd wipe with a paste wax and buff...

google "cleaning antique metal" instead.
'safe' is the the limiting word there. it doesnt really matter what the object is, in this situation anyway.
