Noise at night near Carroll Park

I recently moved to President St. across from Carroll Park, and am extremely disappointed at the amount of noise at night.
It sounds like construction related truck activity, but I'm not sure what it is. It seems to occur at around midnight, and then around 4:00AM although I can't be sure about it as I do manage to sleep part of the night. Is this related to the 340 Court construction? Does anyone know what this is, and what, if anything, I can do?

Could it be the private garbage pick-up? When I lived in SoHo garbage and recycling trucks would come to the restaurants and bars between midnight and 4 a.m. It was unbelievably loud. There wasn’t anything I could do except buy good earplugs.

I doubt there's any heavy-duty construction going on that late at night. As the previous poster said, and is probably correct, the private sanitation trucks come around in the middle of the night to pick up the restaurant trash on Smith St. I live on President bet. Smith & Hoyt, but I don't hear anything except the barges signaling on the Gowanus canal. If you were living in the suburbs prior to moving to President, then it may be some time before you get used to the noise and eventually not even hear it.

And sometimes you just have to move. I have never lived in a suburb in my life - but I can't stand living in noisy places. (Lived on a major avenue in Manhattan once for 3 years, and never got used to the din of trucks at night.) If you are sensitive to noise, you have to live toward the middle of the block in a very residential area - large parts of Park Slope worked nicely for me. And you have to avoid streets with truck traffic (Union St. was a mistake), and fire houses, backyard restaurant patios outside your back windows, etc. It CAN be done, even in the middle of the city. Good luck.

Just to clarify, my wife and I have both lived in Brooklyn for many years. We have had apartments that ranged from extremely quiet, to fairly noisy, but nothing as bad as this. Maybe tonight I'll take a walk and see if I can determine exactly what is going on.

Thanks for the comments.

Based on some window watching last night, I'm thinking that its garbage trucks. At least garbage trucks are part of it. I'll post updates as I learn more.
