end of season boiler question

Now that we've spent our first winter as homeowners with a new boiler, what sort of maintenance do we need to do when we turn off the heat? do we need to drain the boiler and the radiators? thanks, and happy spring!

Turn of the power switch to prevent it from coming on when you're running your air conditioner and sign up for a start-up service in the fall if you'd like a crash course.
At that time, a technician will be able to tell you what specific maintenance procedures your boiler requires.

Of course, if your boiler makes your domestic hot water, you can't turn it off. Just lower your thermostat(s) all the way or switch them to cool.

I usually turn off the pilot. Any truth to the rumor that it's better for the boiler for the pilot to stay lit? Rust?

Yes. That's not a rumor. The pilot protects the boiler, so long as the boiler is made of cast iron.

I have an ancient boiler that feeds the radiators and I am not sure whether it has been drained or not in the past. I drain out a little bit of the sludge every two weeks in the winter when I top up the tank.

I've read different views on whether or not to drain it out entirely for the summer. Does everyone in brownstone Brooklyn leave the water in the tank & in the radiators all summer?
