Day Care in Bed-Stuy

My wife and I just had our first child. We've owned our Brownstone for about 3 years now and we're wondering about day care options in the neighborhood. Any thoughts? What are people doing? Are folks using Nannies?

If so, how are you going about finding good help.

And just how is owning your capital-"B"-brownstone for 3 years related to your need for daycare? Am I missing something?

Maybe you can ask the house to watch the kid.

1:10 -- don't be so nasty. Just answer the question if you have anything to contribute.

As a parent of 13 and 10 year olds, I recommend trying out potential nanny candidates for an afternoon with you at home before making any decisions. Thoroughly check references and don't hire the first person you talk to. Trust your gut and if someone is not working out, cut your losses. Au pairs worked well for us when our kids were older. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby.

2:07 again --

some more thoughts - post nanny wanted signs on bulletin boards at local preschools, pediatrician's office or anywhere kids congregate. Watch the nannies at your local playground and if you see someone good, ask them if they know anyone they can recommend.

Try a local handyman or a neighboring super.
Negotiate the price for the installation because it is considered minor.

I just hope they're more educated than you are.

What if they're white trash???

Every neighborhood has a parent forum. There are yahoo groups like Prospect Heights parents, Park Slope parents, etc. They are most helpful. This is probably not the venue for the topic.

Parkslopeparents.com lists all the groups.

I almost went without bothering to respond to you, but I do want to point out that your unvaluable input puts a damper on the value of this site overall. But I will humor you.

Me living in the neighborhood of Bed-Stuy was me giving potential repsonders a bit of insite to my situation. I was hoping to get feedback from other "BED-STUY" residents who happen to be in my situation and have a bit of advice aside from the obvious.

So in the future, you should really attempt to refrain from saying anything that adds no value.

Putnamdenizen, as usual, Thanks for your suggestion!

Sorry, but I find your "I own my brownstone and I'm looking for day care" puts a damper on the site. (And I love kids.)

The decision between a day care and a private nanny is a very personal one. It largely depends on what sort of care you want for your child, whether you want to bring her/him somewhere or have care at home, how much you want to pay, etc.

And I already feel sorry for your kid.

I am always amazed at the number of pure assholes on these threads.

There is a Stuyvesant Heights Parents Association. I suggest reaching out to them via their yahoo group. I don't have kids but someone from this group may be able to help you out.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHParentsgroup/

Probably more beneficial than this brownstoner bunch. Best wishes.

Hi, I've had my posts attacked mercilessly by trolls on this list - just ignore these pointless and gratuitously nasty responses. Weird people get off on being mean, anonymously, I guess. Park Slope has the parkslopeparents listserve and I believe members on that list know of other neighborhood listserves in Bklyn where you can get the info you're seeking. Check out parkslopeparents.com - contrary to what some may believe, it's not just parents in actual Park Slope. Good luck!
