columbia-hicks waterfront aka cobble hill west
Considering buying in this area and was hoping to get insight into exhaust from BQE and current/potential future flooding issues in the area (say, if water level rises in the future)?
Comments
Have got 35 years experience in Cobble Hill West.
Exhaust from BQE is not a prolem, proximity to water and low density must help.
Noise pollution is line of site, meaning upper floors facing trench are much worse than lower floors.
There is a sump and pump out system that continuosly pumps out water rom trench, as vehicle level is below water table.
Most of the heavy mechanicals in the neighborhood run under Columbia St., and due to recent project have all been replaced.
Will ice caps melt and flood Columbia St? Tiny Tim thought so. In 35 years there has never been Buttermilk Channel related flooding. Global warming is accelerating, yet sea level rise is predicted in inches per decade, unlikely to effect us in our lifetimes.

We live one-half a block west of the BQE on President Street, second floor. With the windows open, you can of course hear the traffic, but it sounds a lot like the ocean. We've only been there a month, but it took exactly one day to get used to. A dim white noise.
We don't smell/see/sense any exhaust, but I'd love to read a report/study about how much remains despite the sea breeze ...
And I agree with 11:55 -- rising waters may be a serious concern, in half a century or so ...

Live on Tiffany Place, facing Tiffany Place and not the BQE. We are on the 4th floor- we can hear a quiet hum when the windows are open and closed but don't mind the sound at all. It does sound like running water, like fassglass said.
No problem with exhaust to speak of... nice cobblestone street in my opinion.
