Back Yard Decks and Code

Any idea where I could fine the building code to build a backyard deck.
I'm looking for construction materials and design guides.

I know that this doesn't answer your question but if the deck is structurally supported (has foundations, footings, ledgers), you need to have an architect or engineer prepare your plans for you.

It's also an obvious statement that many decks in Brooklyn have been built without obtaining a permit. It's my understanding that (while it's been on the books effectively forever) enforcement of this issue has been almost non-existent up until about six years ago. A deck collapsed in Brighton Beach and killed the owner, and from that point on enforcement of this issue has taken on a new seriousness.

If it's any consolation, this is not something particular to the NYC code. You have to get permits for decks even places as exotic as New Jersey and Connecticut.

You can go right to the source. The DoB has a homeowner night every tuesday at 4pm...room 818 in the municipal building on Joralemon St.
