illegal ad on brownstone?
Hi everyone-
We rent an apt in a Brooklyn brownstone. Our landlord recently let a rental agency hang an advertisement on the fence. None of the apts in our building are for rent so this is just a general ad for the rental agency. Is this legal to do? It look horrible to have this hanging out there on the front fence.
Thanks for any advice.

So you are going to tell your landlord, the owner of your building, from whom you rent, that s/he can't hang a sign on his/her own building? A lot of nerve...

no, just asking. it looks terrible and people think apts in our building are for rent.

I'd say your apt's for rent. You just don't know it.

Discuss it with the rental agency.
If that doesn.t work you will have to go to the owner.

Your a RENTER plain and simple ...You own nothing , shut up and pay your rent

I guess I was trying to say that - only a bit less brutal. Unless you think your landlord doens't know about the sign and doesn't want it there, it doesn't really strike me as being your business.

Yes, that is illegal advertising. I hope your landlord gets fined. You can have a friend submit a complaint to the Department of Building's for not having a signage permit.
Go to hell you evil landlords.

I remember looking for an apartment about 10 years ago in philadelphia, there were "for rent" signs up all over on nice looking buildings. when you called the number on these signs they told your there was no rentals in those buildings, the places they did have to offer were in sub-par buildings. It was very frustrating and was very bait and switch.

When you become the owner and not the tenant, then you can have a say in what looks terrible and what does not. You are renting your apartment and have no business being concerned with other areas of the building unless it relates to safety issues. Start saving your money so you can buy your own building and then you can keep it exactly the way you want. If you don't like your landlord's decisions or the way the sign looks, get the hell out and move into a building that you approve of. Did you ever think that maybe the realtor is giving the landlord money to hang the damn sign which in turn might be helping to pay the very high cost of heating and other utilities, thereby keeping your ass warm and your rent at the rate it currently is now. Not all landlords are rolling in the dough! Most of us are just doing the best we can to get by, tenants and landlords alike.

Freakin noesey body ! After seeing you last name i see why . Mind your own business

I'm a landlord, but man you guys are nasty.
Who's last name 8:58?

Ditto to 5:20. Against the law is against the law. If you don't like the law, try and change it, or buy a building in Southeast Asia and you can rent signage space to McDonalds so they can put giant neon arches on it.
This forum is about aesthetics in a Brownstone world. Pride in the neighborhood shouldn't be exclusive to owners, renters are people too no matter their last name.

Oh man ! I you were one of tenants and you told me something like that I would smash your face right into the sign . Then drag you over to the stoop . Open your mouth on the corner of the steps and step on your little pointy head . THEN make U clean up all the broken teeth and mop up all the blood . Then ask you one more time . Now do you have a problem with the sign ? NUFF SAID !

Elliott,
Ignore the ignorant philistine haters here. The City considers the issue of public advertising to be sufficiently important to have passed laws about the subject and I suspect from your information that the sign you cite is in clear violation of that legislation. Read the info at the following link:

Just like child-haters, you tenant-haters could reflect that you were a tenant yourself, probably for years.
The hatred on this site towards tenants (or anyone less fortunate than yourselves) is sickening.
To OP: I'm a landlord and I would accept a tenant's complaints about aesthetic issues, if said nicely. I may choose, however, to ignore them.

No one wants to be reminded of the temporary nature of their existance...

Good citizens should call 311 when a landlord is breaking the law. Life is so much healthier on the right side of the law.

11:49 is probably going to jail soon. what a temper.

just take down the fucking sign. What are they gunna do? Put up another one. then take that one down too.

Dear Poster - as a former renter and recent owner I have to say you really have nothing to complain about. So what if they put up a sign, you dont own the property? If you complain or create headaches for your LL he should just throw you out.
Your rent entitles you to 1 month of living there, thats it. If you dont like what is going on - move. I have done it before. If you want to cause problems for people because you feel like you have some say in what is going on beyond the basic services provided in your lease, get over yourself.

I want to say that reading the hateful answers really makes me want to stop reading Brownstoner. There is no need for such nastiness for a question that is harmless and it even seems the law may be on his side. Mr. B, please consider enforcing registration. I used to be against it, but the tone of so many posts in so unpleasant it makes what used to be my favorite website no fun at all.

Tough talk coming from an unregistered "Guest".

I'm a landlord too. But I am a physically intimidating guy. You sound like you are afraid of your own shadow. I don't need to tell you to limit your violent fantasies to the internet because you already do. I hope you never encounter real-life violence like you write about; I know that if you had, you would never write such disturbed threats.
Since you are a coward, I suggest you take some self-defense classes, they might help you feel better about yourself and less afraid.
