How 'bout that "Fuh-gedda-boutit" ad? Staten Island, here we come!

You gotta hand it to these "Opal Ridge" developers, currently advertising right up there at the top of Brownstoner, no? It's a good ad, if a bit insulting to Brooklyn, if true—sure, SI probably has lower prices, less crime, and better schools. And it got me to click on it. Unfortunately, the house pictured there—while doubtless an appropriate and decent option for a great many people, and more power to them—is so fugly it's causing great torrents of blood to gush from my eyeballs. Good times!

I've been meaning to email Brownstoner and register my distaste. I can't believe he would accept advertising dollars from a company that plans to blatantly diss Brooklyn in an animated banner ad at the top of his homepage. That's called selling out, folks.

Well, 4:36, that's what I thought, at first. But seriously, there are a great many people who are being priced out of Brooklyn, being forced to move everyplace from Riverdale to Jersey, and I'm sure many of those people read this site. It's good marketing--I don't blame Mr. B for running it at all. There are some upsides to SI for some people. (Not moi.)

It's also plainly factual that SI has lower prices, less crime, and better schools than Brooklyn. As does suburban Louisville, and innumerable other places.

Problem is, suburban Louisville is suburban Louisville. And Staten Island is Staten Island. There ya go.

I don't mind the ad--it gets your attention and Mr. B. needs to pay the bills. But the development is an aesthetic abomination! Could the houses be any uglier?

Maybe when Brownstoner is wildly successful, he can turn down advertisers that don't really get it--like the much-missed Nest did in its time.

"I've been meaning to email Brownstoner and register my distaste."

oh good heavens!!

Are you not doing a disservice to Brownstoner by publicly judging his ads? Since when are ads subject to censorship simply because they are not your taste? This is how he makes money to maintain the site. Why does it bother you so much?

file this under "people will complain about anything"

By the way, please know this is the 2nd time this outraged person has created a thread pointing out this Opal Ridge ad. Which if you notice cleverly points this out amongst his weakly stated complaints:

"sure, SI probably has lower prices, less crime, and better schools. And it got me to click on it. Unfortunately, the house pictured there—while doubtless an appropriate and decent option for a great many people..."

People, the OP is the developer, the advertiser! Trying to get us to click on his banner even if to diss the houses, but hoping some buyers will result in it.

Um, retard 12:51, I'm a longtime, registered (unlike you) Brownstoner addict, I've posted on this issue exactly once--right here--and, while I've been called a lot of things, I sure as hell ain't a Staten Island real-estate developer.

If it wasn't clear enough from my initial post, I think this development is hideous. But there is nothing wrong with SI builders offering options to people being priced out of fancier nabes.

OK, if you must leave Brooklyn, the best place in Staten Island for those who love historic houses is in Stapleton on St. Pauls Avenue. It is a designated historic district and on a steep hill that overlooks NY Harbor. The houses are beautiful Victorians.

I'm not a retard, Rehab. I was just wondering why somebody would post twice in one week about this stupid development and word the post in pretty much the same way.

Kind of logical to question that.

And I hardly call a nickname "registered". Try using your real name before getting all superior on everybody for not wanting to be singled out and picked on. Like you picking on me and calling me a retard. Yeah, uh, that really makes me want to register here with this wonderful community. You've convinced me.
