Gardener
My wife and I moved into a brownstone about six months ago that has beautiful gardens in the front and backyards. Neither of us has a particularly greenthumb so we are pretty intimidated about the gardens' upkeep. Gowanus Nursery used to help with the gardens but they longer do residential work. Does anyone have a recommendation for a gardener in the BoCoCa area..thanks

Call the brooklyn botanic garden. They have a garden resource center with a help line:
They also offer classes for wannabe gardeners to walk you through how to design and create a brownstone garden yourself. If you really want to hire someone else, they can give you contact info for those who trained through their advanced horticulture program.
It's also a great place to go and see what kind of plants work well in this climate. Take you camera and show photos of what you like to whomever you hire.

Really, if it's already a beautiful garden and you don't need to plant anything major then just:
1) turn on water.
2) point water at plants.
3) look for weeds.
4) Pull weeds.
No need for a green thumb and you might find you enjoy the zen and art of horticultural maintenance!

I would check with Liberty Sunset gardens in Red Hook. The do some residential work and visiting their site in Red Hook on the water is worth a visit.. It's my favorite place.. plus there are three other garden centers in Red Hook.

I would be very careful sir, as to whom you hire as a gardener. History is full of stories where the young, strapping gardener working in the heat of the day is lured into the home by the lady of the manor for more than just a refreshing iced tea. This is even occurring in Brooklyn now with the increasing presence of the aristocracy pushing out the gentrified classes and their insatiable need for household help. Happy April Fool's Day and thanks to The Onion for the last factoid.

My friend Grace lives in Carroll Gardens and she has a gardening business. She works on some really nice places in Riverdale and NYC.
Check out her website. gracefulgardensnyc.com
