Cleaning Air Ducts
My husband and I are buying an old limestone which uses forced air. We are sure that the ducts have not been cleaned in decades and want to get that work done. Has anyone used a company that they like and can recommend?
Thanks!

Any heating company does this kind of work.
Congrats on your new house!

Try Victory Brothers - 718-526-4718. They installed a brand new heating system for me. Not sure if the clean ducts but given the quality service they offered, it's worth a shot.

not true no heating & cooling company I know ever cleans ducts as the equipment required is expensive & specialized. I had to get a company from Yonkers called Duct Dusters. Very good may need to get a neighbor to join as they want to do 2 or 3 homes to make it viable to come to Bklyn. they are a very good company with good employees

Thanks. Any idea on cost for such a project? The house is four stories.

you don't need to get them cleaned. When we bought our brownstone with forced air, many companies were quick to try to sell us this service, but research showed it's almost never needed. Search this site for old postings.

Jurist, I need to do the same in my house and was gonna go with Duct Dusters (the guy came by promptly, sent me the proposal promptly, reasonable estimate, etc. . .) I was wondering if perhaps we should get together on this and have him do both buildings at once, might get the price down a bit. I'm in fort Greene. We got ours cleaned because there was a horrible burning smell from the accumulated dust the first few times the heat came on. We used Victory Brothers (mentioned above) and they were not cheap but they got the job done. I'd recommend them.

"there was a horrible burning smell from the accumulated dust the first few times the heat came on."
I get that every year when I first turn on the heat--I think it's normal and it dissapates pretty quickly. There may be some circumstances where duct cleaning is necessary, but IMO a burning smell, caused by dust accumulation in the off season isn't one of them. For most normal purposes I thinkthat specialuzed duct cledaning is little better than a scam. Of coursed you SHOULD change,or clean your furnace filter and (probably) vacuum the hot air registers before turning on your heat at the beginning of each heating season.

Sorry for all the typos in my previous post--it's my keyboading skills [or lack thereof] rather than my spelling.
