Bathroom Reno - any contractor recos?
Hi there,
I'm closing on Friday - 3 weeks late - and moving into my new space on April 5th. I need someone to demo the old tile in the bathroom and install the new somewhat quickly. Any recommendations on someone that's fast and reasonably priced? Everyone on this board always seems to have the inside scoop. Thank you in advance!

Do not hire Lino's Home Improvement from Staten Island.
They are a father and son business.
I just got the highest estimate I have ever heard of anywhere.
In additition they never showed me a copy of their insurance certificate or their lisence from Department of consumers affairs for home improvement contractors license as rquired by law to work in my building.
They new all that stuff in advance to bring with them for verification on my part.
Get all your ducks in a row before you hand over any money.
Get a copy of the unsigned contract to take home with you to read thoroughly.
This way a contractor can't put the pressure on you.

Thanks for the advice, Ysabelle, I will keep this in mind!

Ysabelle...are you kidding he was talking about replacing tile? You are giving really bad advice here.....ridiculous.
OP...don't listen to her for a tile replacement job..

Disagree partially with 12:01.
Even replacing tile in many co-ops (including mine) require a NYC licensed and insured contractor.
Check if your co-op/condo board has any of these requirements. If not, you can find anyone off the street (though this doesn't mean you should). You don't want to get off on the wrong foot.

i've been working with the co-op, and they've outlined areas where people need to be insured and licensed. I received a good reco on a tile guy from a friend, but still need someone to help demo the bathroom.
i am looking for real help here, so please don't fight on this post. trying to find help when you're unconnected to the contracting world is exhausting enough.
cheers.

Listen
You have to get the right person so its good that Y told u who to stay away from. Tiling is not just about slapping tiles on. I can tell u my horror story but I won't. Get some one with a good reccomendation.
Good luck check in the archives... By the way the worker I got to retify the situation wasn't licensed.
Cheers K

The bathroom renovation might involve a little more than removing wall and floor tile.
If the job is done properly the toilet might have to be disconnected from the floor and the sink might have to be disconnected with the removal of the vanity.
If there is one.
Hopefully you have a shut off valve behind the toilet.
You might also have hot and cold water shut off valves behind the sink.
This is just a suggestion....... try to get a list of tile contractors from a local tile store or if your super is not a flake but a decent sort of guy maybe he will do it for you. Just ask him nicely.

Again Ysabelle please find a man and get laid or something. I am willing to start a fund to hire a man for you (it probably going to be steep however). As usual the old bat is talking about a subject about which she knows nothing. You will only get insurance certificates AFTER a contract has been signed but BEFORE starting the work. Why give you a certificate for no $ so you can then hire some unlicensed schmuck. Contractors are required to have their license# only on their letterhead or advertizing (business cards etc.), they don't carry the physical license with them.
O.P. just to let you know speed and reasonable price don't usually go together, you are setting yourself up to be disappointed. Want the job done? Speed/done right=top $ penalty/bonus contract clauses.

you should improve your reading skill and learn comprehension.
i stated a copy of a liability policy which contractors have due to prior jobs.
If a contractor has a lisence he will carry it with him maybe in his wallet. It is the size of a credit card.
By the way the liscence has a photo on it
To the op if you have any questions about the lisence please call department of consumer affairs.
They issue the lisence.

9:45 here, Ysabelle again please find a man and get laid or something. The contractors license is an 8.5x11" certificate to be hung at the contractors place of business. What you may have been asking for is a home improvement SALESPERSONS photo I.D. these items are easy enough to verify. Did you consider maybe the contractor did not show you these things because he realized from the start he did not want to deal with a psycho, and gave you a high price just to shut you up so he could leave?

Your logic is fascinating
(maybe for the lonney bin)
This is a board where people are seeking all sorts of information on real estate and related subjects.
It would be nice if they had the oppurtunity to pursue their interests
in a peaceul manner without any hostility from the simple mindedly ignorant Dumbass that you are.
You are supposed to be helping the op in a non confrontational manner.
After all an inquery is only an inquery

Hello,
We're moving into our new apartment in a brownstone in Park Slope. We need a contractor to re-do our kitchen, install wood floors in kitchen area and laundry area, install vanity in bathroom, remove wall paper, remove water tank heaters (2) and install tankless heaters (2) and pain our entire place. Any recommendation on a good contractor would be appreciated.
Thank you
Jackie

I saw these posts after I had Linos in my home to complete a tile backsplash in my kitchen and bathroom tile work. I can attest that they were not overpriced. I would rather work with a father and son team then some chain tile store. A family owned business gives the extra special touch. Thanks Michael & Mike for a job well done !
