go to bowery north of Grand street. It is 3 or four blocks of wall to wall lighting stores. Any kind of light fixture imaginable will be found there.

or
bowery - every kind of light. every kind of price. Spend a day there, you'll head will spin.

Yes, your head will spin, but you won't see EVERY kind of light, just the standard and common ones (which is a lot of types, I don't disagree with that.)
Your best bet is to first figure out what your STYLE is. It is best to start with the architecture of your home - when it was built, etc. (This is true for apartments as well as brownstones.) Rejuvenation can help you pin that down.
Then, look at your renovation (or previous ones.) Based on your renovation, is it traditional or more modern? Then, look at your preferred style of furniture and decor (victorian, mission/arts and crafts, mid-century, more minimalist modern, etc.)
Sometimes, the kind of lighting you are just drawn to will reflect all of the above (your home's architectural style, your reno, your furnishing taste.) But you won't figure that out on the Bowery while your head is spinning.
Look at stuff in magazines and online, focusing on the things that characterize the fixtures by period and style, to figure out what you want. THEN go shopping. Depending on your style, you may or may not find it on the Bowery (or in any other one place.)

6:33 is correct, so is 3:02. I just bought a buncha fixtures on the Bowery, but we like Arts and Crafts also, in fact all of our furniture is Mission. So for some fixtures we bought from thebrightspot.com, which specializes in Mission and Art Deco stuff.

lampsplus.com -- good filters to narrow down what you're looking for
circalighting.com -- tasteful, "transitional" design lights at reasonable prices
alluminaire.com -- customizable pendants, very user-friendly & reasonably priced

lamp warehouse on Ft. Hamilton & 39th

yeah, lamp warehouse is good. found a schoolhouse pendant there for the kitchen that I never could find on the bowery. (Would have got it from rejuvenation, but was sprucing up fast and cheap to sell.)

You should look into Techlighting.
They have very nice mono-spots and wall and ceiling track which you can install, then a wide selection of lights to pick at your leisure.
The electrician can do the installation job, and you can pick or change your heads ( the lights) later.
I like very small, unobtrusive lighting and wasted a lot of money until I came upon techlighting. I think their website is www.techlighting.com.
