Original stain color

We are trying to match the stain color of our new moldings to the original wood moldings that are still stained. It is that deep reddish brown. Anyone have a brand/color name that they have had luck with? Thanks!

Minwax makes some good penetrating stains that are available everywhere. See http://www.minwax.com/

Matchibg the color can be tricky, you may have to buy a few of the smallest cans they have to see which is the best match.

When I went to match my "deep reddish brown" woodwork, it was surprisingly the "cherry" color stain that matched. Surprising, because it didn't look like cherry on the oak woodwork - it looked reddish brown. Don't know if what you mean by "deep reddish brown" is what I had, but don't overlook seeing if cherry stain color is what you need.

I ended up having to layer several minwax colors to match existing walnut trim. The color was dark with a redish gold glow. The process was pretty easy. Just start in a less visible spot, wipe on, let sit for a couple of minutes, wipe off excess and let dry, then on to the next layer.

The stain on my woodwork was originally stained very dark...I found that Minwax's Bombay Mahagony Polyshade (a stain and poly together) worked very well and you really can't tell the difference between the old and the new. It comes in Satin and Semi-gloss.

You will have to mix stains until you get it right. You can probably mix cherry with walnut.

I used Barlett's maple and dark oak (mixed); you can see pix of the original woodwork at:

(I had to stain moulding the same color and it worked amazingly well.
