Got a grocery store you love--or even kinda like--in Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill, or Bed-Stuy?
I'm looking for decent grocery alternatives closer to my joint than Fairway and better than my crummy Associated on Myrtle, and it occurred to me that maybe I'm overlooking some nice markets reasonably nearby. I just read in another thread that some folks in Bed Stuy really like their Foodtown on Fulton. Anybody else have a hidden gem?
Sure, it would be nice to find places with Balducci's-level cheese, baked goods, and organic lentils, but I would also be thrilled to find a regular ol' market whose meat is the right color and not stinking to high heaven.
Any help much appreciated!

Its not just a foodtown in renovation plaza--its a super foodtown-complete with olive bar, health foods, fresh fish market etc. Its also suburban sized with convenient hours and delivery.

I think the "Renovation Plaza" comment was a funny Punn. I've never seen the place and renovations not going on.
Restoration Plaza is located between New York & Brooklyn Aves and Fulton St.

I can't recommend "one-stop shopping," but I frequently make the Carroll Gardens food tour for provisions:
Cheese: Stinky Cheese on Smith at Degraw (I think). Good cheese, nice staff. Also, the bakery/patisserie next door is quite good as well.
Meat:
Dos Paisanos on Smith at Bergen. Very good and reasonable meat. They also have prime aged beef if that's your thing.
Esposito Pork Store--on Court at President. Very good meat, especially pork and beef. A little pricier than Paisanos.
Both of the above have decent Italian provisions as well.
Fish--Fish Tales on Court at Bergen.
Produce--Pacific Green on Court at Pacific. Decent produce and other staples. The only thing that I wouldn't recommend is much of the cheese--fancy stuff doesn't sell fast enough and it tastes like the fridge case!
Happy shopping.

I work at at the Crunch on Flatbush and Sterling and I often duck into the Key Food across the street before I head home. It's ok. Pro's: large section of organic products, especially canned and dry goods, decent beer selection, pretty fresh meat department, decent sized cheese section, ok deli. Con's: its TINY, don't even think about going in there for a big shopping trip, its so cramped. They have organic produce that usually seems to be of good quality but the selection is very small. And they have high shelves, you frequently need to get someone to help you get something up high, especially if you are opting for the cheaper brand! But it's ok.
For what it's worth... I go to the Associated on Myrtle a lot, simply for their walk-in beer area. But that's just me.
Little side rant... why does no one in this city carry frozen hash browns? Like, just shredded potatoes, not anything thats been fried? They are very hard to find...

Key Food on 5th Avenue in Park Slope is pretty decent. Large selection of imported foods, some organic produce and dairy products, D'Artagnan meats, wide selection of beers, olives, cheeses, decent deli. The real reason we go from Clinton Hill is their parking lot. Pet peeve - vegetables and fruit in styrofoam trays with saran wrap. But it smells fine and the manager is very open to suggestions.

I also recommend the Super Foodtown at Restoration Plaza. Their delivery service is quite good (an extra $9) and is worth it, especially for large or heavy stuff like large bags of pet food, kitty litter, 12 packs of tissues, etc, that take up so much space in my rolling shopping cart. They do call when they are out of stuff. I tend to go there in person for my meat and produce, but that's me.
Their produce is better than anyone else in the neighborhood - about 6 varieties of apples, several varieties oranges, lots of fresh green veggies, several kinds of potatoes and onions, etc. They also carry some more exotic fruits and vegetables. The deli is pretty good, as are the varietal cheeses. They carry soy products, some organic products, and fresh baked goods and bagels. The meat selections are good, and have always been fresh. They also have a good selection of canned, frozen and processed foods and pastas, cereals, dairy, etc. My only complaint is that the space between the aisles is narrow, and there isn't enough room for carts to get around when the lines get long, but I haven't seen any NYC market that isn't like that.
I know I sound like a flack for F'town, but if you had seen what we had before, this is like food heaven.

The Associated on Myrtle usually has one of two brands of frozen hash browns in the lower right freezer case oppostite the Oscar Mayer lunchmeat section.
Hopefully the Associated will go under, a larger building will be built where it stands and a better market will take its place.

We use Key Food on Flatbush and Natural Land (the large Korean greengrocer on Flatbush across the street). Both open 24 hours a day. Sweet.
But I'm assuming you're in a car -- in which case the Met Food on Vanderbilt btw Prospect and Park isn't bad at all. They sell organic chickens and beef; their produce is OK too.

Whoops--obviously I have renovation on my mind>

I have to mention the Ft Greene Farmers Market on Saturday. It has a great fish vendor (fresher fish than you will buy in ANY store), organic meat (friends rave about the hot dogs), seasonal produce, cheese, etc. And of course, it is all local, who can argue with that? The challenge is to organize your Saturday around marketing.
