Good news/bad news for Clinton Hill residents who eat...
I'm just sayin': This is what the Associated market on Myrtle Ave. does when it's garlic gets so old and dried-up that it sprouts: They cut off the sprouts, turn it upside-down onto a styrofoam tray, and shrink-wrap it to defraud their customers. And it's still there more than a week after several shoppers complained to management about it. If you care about food and your customers, you throw away the spoiled stuff, capisce?
Assos, are we supposed to believe the freshness dates on your pork and chicken?
In happier news: praise cheeses! As of about yesterday, the cheese case is now stocked at Provisions on Fulton in Ft. Greene, and god bless 'em for it. I like Kraft Singles as much as the next guy, but once in a while, when company's coming, it's nice to find something different. Please shop there and keep the turnover brisk for freshness--particularly on the trout. And the oysters. (Oysters, no less-- unbelievable.) Best o' luck to you, Greene Grapers. Thanks for giving a shit.

A good cook can work wonders with past-their-prime veggies. Italian peasant cookery is based on that premise -- it's why minestrone soup was invented, so that bad vegetables wouldn't go to waste. Find something more useful to whine about, you spoiled yuppie.

When I lived in SC in a mostly poor mill town the local Food Lion would "wash" the chicken and pork in bleach and re-date it. Sometimes the meat section smelled like a roadside corpse. They were eventually caught doing this and fined. If I remember right they tried this same trick again and were caught again. When I moved to Ft. Greene Place twenty years ago the conditions were no better. You had to travel to Park Slope to shop.

The Korean Grocer directly across the street from Mrytle Ave Associated has lovely produce. I usually head there after buying non-perishables from Associated. Just a thought!

The Korean grocery across from the Associated used to be better--I wouldn't called the produce uniformly "lovely," but often better than the Associated.
I'd like to support GG Provisions, but their prices are mostly appalling. I understand that a local shop needs to charge more--but not 30-40% more. Just like the wine shop, their markup is waayyyy tooo high.

7:05: No shit. That's not the point. The point is that these crap-ass grocery stores are deliberately trying to sell spoiled food to people. If you're satisfied with that, you are, well, an idiot.

7:05, I cook and I agree about using ingredients. But they are mis-representing them as fresh. Old stuff should be priced accordingly.
Your 'yuppie' comment is a bit outta line, methinks. Yuppies will figure out how to make it to Fairway or Costco. The people who get screwed are the ones stuck in the neighborhood, usually people of color and the elderly.
