Electrician license?

My husband and I are looking into buying a co-op that needs some electrical work (contract is out, not signed). I know we need to use a licensed electrician for this work, but I have not been able to figure out if they need to be licensed in New York City. Does anyone know the answer to this? I ask because I know an electrician who is licensed in New Jersey...

In NY the licensing is with the bureau of electrical control (dob)Department of buildings.

.First find out from the coop board if you can hire an out of state electrician with only an out of state licesnce.

They must be licensed in the county the work is being performed in. An electrician from Long Island can't do work in NYC. Hell, an electrician from Nassau can't do work in Suffolk. The licenses are transferable from county to county within the state for a fee, with the exception of cities with a population of more than 1,000,000 (i.e. NYC). The 5 boroughs are a special animal, they are like their own sovereign nation. Hopefully some of that will change when we adopt IBC this summer. Basically the answer to your question is...no. Sorry.
