Do you need to treat Granite Countertops?

I wanted to know if new granite kitchen countertops need to be treated with any type of sealant?

Most do need to be sealed occassionally. You can tell if yours needs a sealer by placing a wet sponge on the counter for a few minutes. If when you remove the sponge, there is a dark spot on the granite, then you need to reapply sealer. (after the water spot dries out of course) No spot, nothing is getting thru.

I believe most granite gets sealed before its installed (or by the installer) so if its new you probably have at least a year before you have to worry.

All stone needs to be sealed about onnce a year. You can do it your self. It'll take you 10 minutes. Go to Home Depot and buy a stoner sealer and a sponge, gloves and follow insturctions.

Actually thats not true guest. Some granites are resined before it ever gets to your house so you don't need to seal it. I dont think resealing would hurt but why bother if you don't need it?

It depends on the granite and on the treatment before you had it installed. My granite does not need sealing again. Can you check with the installer? They should be able to tell you.

There is also the oil and lemon juice test. If you have a small pc of the granite (sample) try leaving some vegetable oil and another spot with lemon juice on it for a while. If the oil does not sink in, and the lemon juice does not etch the stone, it probably does not need sealing.
