Design/Build vs GC
What is the difference between hiring a General Contractor versus a Design/Build firm? I need some exterior and minor interior work done, does it make sense to hire a design/build?

the difference is 'deign'. if all you need is a build out or implementation, and all planning and design is done, no need for the design in design/build.

If the work is minor and you know what you want to do, I wouldn't bother with a design/build outfit. However, if you need ideas and don't want to deal separately with a designer/architect and a contractor then this may work for you. I talked to one design/build co. for some interior renovations, but ultimately decided against it b/c it worked out to be more expensive than using an architect and contractor separately.

I think a good architect or interior designer who does layout work is invaluable. If all you do everyday is layout space then you are gonna be very good at it.
A GC can give you ideas on what to do but as a rule the GC will just follow what is on the design.
