Bed Stuy Inquiry
My husband and I are considering a house near the corner of Macon and Stuvesant (east of Stuy). Any insight from those who live in the area regarding this block would be appreciated... Vibe, safety, community, etc...

I live one block from there. The walk from the subway is safe. Despite not being very commercial, Stuyvesant has some pedestrian traffic walking to and from the subway at most times of the day and night. Also there are often cops on foot in Fulton Park and on Stuyvesant. It's a fairly quiet area. Our block is mostly home owners and very friendly, and I'm assuming yours would be the same, but you should go there at various times of the day and talk to people. Also you would be close to Solomon's Porch, Bread-Stuy and the other stores on Lewis avenue. The only thing that is really missing from the immediate area is a decent supermarket, but we go to Foodtown on Fulton, which is very good and one Subway stop or a 20 minute walk away.

Interested in where you are moving from. I moved here last year from UES Manhattan. I love it. The neighbors are all very friendly and there'sd a fairly strong neighborhood "watch" going on. The main thing lacking vs. the UES is the vast amount of restaurants to walk to. There's a new wine shop on Marcus Garvey & Macon and the Foodtown is far superior to most supermarkets in Manhattan.
I live right up the street on Stuyvesant and wanted the whole brownstone thing with all the architectural detail and the yard. I walk to/from the subway and it's always pretty busy and safe. If I go to dinner late in Manhattan or elsewhere I always take a car back but I never took the subways late in Manhattan either becasue I just always wanted to take taxis. Yes, I miss the taxis too. I find the A train to be pretty efficient as things go. I can get into Manhattan faster than people in Brooklyn that are actually closer to Manhattan but have to take the A train.
You can't beat the property values here and the quality of the housing stock. People say hello and that just doesn't happen in Manhattan or the now busier/trendier parts of Brooklyn
If you want to chat more post your email and i'll respond.
Good luck.
PS There's a great block party on your street in late August

1:00 here again. I agree with everything daveinbedstuy said.
I have to add that I moved here after living in Manhattan and Park Slope, and one of the reason we love the area so much is that people are extremely friendly (someone recently said on the forum "almost pathologically friendly"!)
The commute on the A train, much better than my former commute on the F from park slope. If you want to take a cab from home, there is a car service on Halsey between Stuy and Lewis (Brown and Brown) which has been very convenient for the few times I needed them.
I have to say, I really think this area (Stuy Heights and surrounding blocks) is currently one of the best value in Brooklyn, when you consider the housing stock, the quality of life, and the commute. If you have more specific questions and want to post your email I can also contact you.

sorry I meant to say that the A gets you into Manhattan faster than people who are closer but have to take the F train as 1:40 reiterates.
I go to Solomon's Porch and Bassam (Lewis Ave @ McDounough) and Brook's Valley (Tompkins & Hancock)..the latter two are BYOB. And, I .ve also been to Augie's Brownstone Inn on Fulton...friendly older crowd for a beer.

We'd be moving from Boerum Hill, which we love. But we're anxious to buy and have found a home that has many original details, but also some room to design (read: also many non-original details that we want to re-think). We've spent a lot of time exploring the area on the weekends, but really think the best way to find out what it feels like to actually live somewhere is to ask those who do. We appreciate your comments...

I live up Stuyvesant from here, and I have to say that I like the walk to the A train a lot, even if for me it is long (12-15min, I'm closer to the J)
That neighborhood is really nice, I'm the one who said "pathologically friendly," and it's true.

To the OP:
My fiancée and I have recently signed a contract to purchase a home in Stuyvesant Heights. The deciding factors for us were all the things previously mentioned by Dave and guest. We spent a lot of time in the neighborhood, and really liked the general vibe. Sure there are some drawbacks when it comes to eating options and such. However, overall the value can't be beat.
We are really looking forward to closing (barring any unforeseen hiccups along the way), and properly meeting our new neighbors...maybe you!

LOL.... from BoerummHill!!!! When i'm tired of the restaurants here I go to Boerum Hill!!! Jolie, Downtown Atlantic, Stan's, and the various Japanese and Mexican places.
I also go there for my higher end shopping needs..Smith St and Court St...Fish Tales and Los Paisanos Meats are just 2 stops away on the A train and never have to go to Manhattan or any further into Brooklyn anymore
Are you buying the yellow painted house on the south side or the one across the street with the small brick wall in the front??
