Where to buy freestanding cabinets for kitchen?
Where do I find a piece like the one shown in the picture?
Instead of putting in built-in cabinets along one wall of my kitchen, I want to put in a sideboard type piece, which is big enough to store dishes and plates, has drawers for utensils, and is high enough to use as a kitchen counter (36 inches). Where do I find such a critter? I have looked and looked online, and this is the only piece I've been able to find. (I like it, but prefer to see it in person first.)
Thank you.

I've seen similar pieces at antique shows upstate.

There is a store in NJ called Platypus (www.platypusonline.com) that sells this type of furniture. I believe you select the finish and top as well.

Why not an actual antique sideboard. The one we have in our dining room is aprox.36" high and 60" wide which, i think is a fairly typical size.
I never thought of using ours in the kitchen, but we were so disgusted at the new built in cabinets available when we bought our house (long ago) that we purchased two free-standing "Hooser" kitchen cabinets which are very functional and IMO look great. However they're nothing like a sideboard.
Here's a typical Hooser on eBay (caviat--for illustrative purposes only--I don't know the seller). porcelain-counter top Hoosers like this one are fairly late-earlier models, like ours' have aluminum counter tops.

any custom/semi-custom kitchen place, just need to direct them to wrap molding around the bottom and top under the counter top like the picture

If you want it to look new:
Hire an architect. They design it. Then hire a Contractor or millworker to build it.
However, if you want it to look old, then do as Bob says.

Gosh, an architect to design a sideboard and a contractor to build it? That's a tad over the top. A cabinet maker is who designs and builds pieces like that.
I'm bored with matchy matchy kitchens so I'm with Bob, just buy a vintage or antique sideboard or buffet and put it in your kitchen. We know someone who did it and it looks fantastic.

Another option is architectural salvage, pieces that were removed from old houses. Try Olde Good Things in Manhattan.

High Falls Furniture in Vermont is featured a lot in Domino magazine-- many of their pieces have the same look.

You can try Trailerpark in parkslope. They have similar pieces and are also willing to customize.
Good Luck.
