Visitors from Out of Town

Can anyone recommend a Bed & Breakfast or an affordable hotel in a safe area? Acquaintances from AZ are coming to New York for a long weekend in July and asked for recommendations. They were shocked at the prices of hotels in Manhattan but do not want to stay in a dive hotel. I'm not quite sure they will have much of a choice but promised to ask around. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try craigslist but be careful.

Windsor Terrace and Kensington have a number of B&B's to select from, believe Park Slope may have a handful as well

Although their options aren't in abundance as Manhattan, they will definitely have choices. The Brooklyn Touristm has a list of lodging at: http://www.visitbrooklyn.org/lodging.html

As far as what's safe, the majority of them are...the Holiday Inn Express is a newbie as well as La Jolie in Williamsburg.

If your guests need help with Brooklyn lodging, bookings and entertainment itineraries, they can check out: http://www.allaboutbrooklyn.com/brooklyndayout.htm

Hope this helps!

Thank you all so much for your help and suggestions. I will pass them all along to her.

I know the following is a ridiculous question but I promised to ask. Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent hotel in Manhattan that is not overpriced?

Thanks again.

I think the best thing to do is check tripadvisor.com. It's a great resource and people really go all out with reviews and candid traveler photographs. There are a number of budget hotels in Manhattan that are listed on tripadvisor.com

The Hotel Belleclaire on the Upper West Side sometimes has good deals when they're not too crowded.

I used this service for vacation sublets and it turned out great. www.Harmonyc.com. They are a service representing apartment sublets for short term. I got an apartment for a week for relatives for $750 on the upper east side. They loved it, especially the cost.

The East Village Bed and Coffee gets favorable reviews on the internet, and I believe it was only $100/night, tax included, when I last checked it a year and a half ago. I've never been there, though.

If they like hostels a new one called Crown Brownstone at 958 St. Mark's Avenue, Brooklyn is open and taking reservations. I was there and they have a couple of private rooms and everything is new. They are located a a quiet street about three blocks from the train.

The best low-price (relative to NYC) hotel is the Cosmopolitan in Tribeca. The lowest price room is around $160 a night. Word has spread among European tourists, so the place gets fully booked up several weeks in advance. You see all Europeans when you go there. The rooms are small but it's a very clean hotel and the location can't be beat. It's right outside the Chambers Street 2/3 entrance, and near all kinds of restaurants, and there's a Starbucks on the ground floor.
