Installing an A/C system in old brownstone

Does anyone out there have recommendations for the best way (or company to use) to install a central A/C system to cool 3 floors of an old brownstone? We'd like to run ducts down through the closets and keep the duct work to a minimum, even if it means not every room gets A/C directly. Can anyone recommend someone who's creative and economical in doing this? And what should we expect to pay for three floors? Would love any suggestions.

ALL HVAC (add on this page) are good and reliable
Typ solution in normal size bstone is a package (5 tons) unit on the roof with a trunk coming down the center of the house and branching out.
They did my house and many of my friends'.

Palone Brothers will be way cheaper than All Hvac. Both companies come recommended and do a lot of brownstone installations.

There are, as with most things, lots of details, such as freon vs non freon, the laws are changing, etc. Don't get stuck with an old unit, you will not be able to buy coolant for it in a year or so, etc. etc. Do your homework, and I would ignore the cheapest vendors. you get what you pay for.

If you live in a landmarked district...don't forget landmarks is not going to want it visible from the street. And yes, you have to file it.

Does your place still have the old vents from a forced air heat system? I see these all the time in brownstones that converted over to radiators but left the ducts. You could use those ducts with the attractive old registers and keep the look of the house as is and not sacrifice closet space.

I have just completed a central A/C in our house in park slope - 4 floors, and I would love to make a recommendation of our contractor. I got 4 quotes, and selected Phil's air conditioning, he had an equally reasonable price with another company however , Phil was particularly creative in the up front process with helping me get a good sense of solving the usual issues, utilizing existing ducts, small spaces etc... The end result is great, thus the recommendation, and I have to say he will bend over backwards to get it right and make you happy. Phil's office number is 718 477 0081. My name is Hamish and my number is 347 689 2943 if you would like to speak to me or see his work at our place.

Consider a mini-duct system by Unico or Spacepak. The ducts are just 2" and more importantly, there are no huge units inside your rooms.
