Suggestions for Roofdeck addition

I want to add a roofdeck to my brownstone. I have a rubber roof, and a staircase leading to the roof. I know I have to consult an engineer and have been advised to use sectional decking which can be removed for roof repairs etc. Has anyone done this? if so, can you recommend a builder and/or engineer. Lastly, any ideas on cost - figuring about 18x20 deck. All suggestions, ideas, concerns welcome. I'd like to get everything lined up for a springtime start.

thanks

Why do all owners have ridiculous notions of schedule? You should have started this process in the early Fall.

I don't know why the other posters think this is so ridiculous. I had my deck built a couple of years ago by Decks R Us (dialadeck.com) in about 3 days. My deck is far bigger than you're talking about. It was under $15/sq ft. for a composite wood product. I know real wood is prettier, but if you can't afford IPE at $40/sqft, go with the composite. Treated woods will splinter very quickly in full sun.

This has to be approved by the building department, and thus it has to be drawn and stamped by an engineer.

Brownstoner profiled a roof deck garden recently that was pretty dreamy...do a search here or ask if they can send you the link.

I just had a parlour (2nd floor) yard deck built by sketch and hammer. Susan is very professional, has great workers and did a fantastic job.

Susan will build you one that meets all code...certainly something you need to know about for resale purposes.

Decks are tricky,if your deck is wood you are allowed 20% of roof for decking. If your roof is strong enough go for stone pavers about 40 to 50 lbs per sq ft. Look to spend about 20 $ a sq foot for wood deck and 50 to 60$ for stone paver deck. If your roof can only hold 10 to 15 lbs per sq foot your only options are wood (wood only 20% of deck because it flamable) or lite weight pavers which are 100% fire proof rated and yoy can pave your whole deck.

All the best
