Help! Plaster medalion looks like it is about to fall and take ceiling with it!

Discovered yesterday severe cracks around plaster medalion. Cracks start along (bad) drywall patch done by the previous owner. Tried to secure plaster to lathe with plaster anchors - had a hard time hitting anything stable. Any tips on how to salvage? Contractor recs? Any advice is much appreciated.

Same thing was happening in my house. Actually chunks of plaster was starting to come down. So we decided to preempt this by removing the medalion but that seemed to have been the only thing keeping up the ceiling and at that point we ended up taking down the entire ceiling. I don't mean to scare you, but its possible you are in the same situation. Find a reputable contractor.

You should be able to keep the medallion in place by drilling a pilot hole in a flat area of the design. A couple drywall screws should do the trick. Countersink your holes so the screws can be plastered over. You should be able to screw into wood closer to the center of the medallion. Your only other option is to take it down, however that's not an easy task with out breaking it. If you do take it down it would be a good time to change the electric box too. Good luck.
