Getting oxygen into a boiler room

We need to get some oxygen into our boiler room to correct a violation. Our plumber is suggesting that they drill holes into the hatch in order to vent the room.

Is this something people have heard of?

Is there a better way to handle this?

It seems like a quick fix to us, not to mention an open invitation to varmints.

Would love an answer ASAP as the plumber is on his way over.

Thanks!

Is there any place you can install a motorized louver in the basement wall? It's uaually interlocked with the boiler/furnace and will open only when it fires.

If the boiler room is separate sealed space, crudely venting basement with holes in hatch will not work.
Duct to exterior would not need to be too big. I think that free air rather than mech closure is easier and fail-proof.

Just keep in mind you should have at least one square inch of make up air for every 10,000 BTUs of boiler input.

A 200,000 BTU boiler requires at least 20 square inches of opening to outside air.

yes you can just drill holes in your metal hatch. many people do this. just so the air from the holes in your hatch can get to the boiler. a plumber can tell you these things and they know.

try a vented hood for the hatch. probably costs $250.

I believe the ventilation requirement is 1 inch of free air per 2,000 BTU input.Where did you get your fact from Master Plumber?
