Formal Dining with Children?

I absolutely love the idea of purchasing a formal traditional dining room set with seating for 6+ people, having 4 year old twins I already feel stress with the thought of them making scratches, nicks & spills on what would be our daily dining table.
Can anyone offer suggestions on a table that’s scratch resistant and worry free?

use a cover that protects the table and remove it for the few formal sittings.

They make special table pads for dining room tables.
if you want you can put a plastic tablecloth over it so the kids can eat at the table.

I also have 4 year-old twins and I've thought of ways on how to twin-proof my house, but guess what, it's impossible. I just constantly remind them of the house rules.

A farmhouse table that's already a bit distressed would be very durable, but not at all formal.

I would get the table you love and cover it with oilcloth for everyday use. You can get pads as well if the surface is really delicate.

You can make a tabletop really durable with a heavy polyurethane finish, but this really detracts from its beauty, IMO.

tinarina has the best solution. Try VivaTerra.com they have some very nice reclaimed dining tables.

Tablepads are standard for high-end tables. If you are looking at antique/vintage tables, they often already come with them. That's how the tables stayed in good enough condition all those years. My brothers and sisters and I saw the real surface of my mother's good table twice a year. Now as adults we argue over who will inherit it.

Try www.brooklynfarmtable.com It is my husband's business, he advertises on this site.
He is in Red Hook, makes everything custom from reclaimed wood from NYC buildings.
