Demo a tile floor?
Hi everybody,
My dad and I did the demo of my kitchen this weekend, but taking out the tile floor proved too big of a job. It's ceramic tile set in 2 inches of mortar, and would have taken us forever.
Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who does this kind of work?

I'm guessing you attempted your demo with a hammer and chisel, and you made very little progress. However, before you hire someone, consider renting a demolition hammer (Bosch makes some good ones) to break the mortar and tile. You can rent one from a tool rental shop (or if you have to, Home Depot). I used one to demo my bathroom ceramic floor that was set in about 2 inches of mortar with steel mesh. I initially tried the hammer/chisel route but was also frustrated by the lack of progress. It took me less than an hour to break up the whole floor using the demolition hammer.

Actually, I did rent a demolition hammer, which helped a lot, but it was still pretty tough. Since it was a Saturday and we were shaking the whole building, I decided to wait and have someone come in on a weekday when less people are around.

it appears you are doing the work illegally ina condo or co-op. Why should we give you advice to continue this? Do things the right way.

I am not the OP but 12:29 how do you know this person is doing illegal work, they mention nothing about where the kitchen is. Or anything that would make me this take the work being dont is in a coop or condo. why can people just answer questions and help each other out!

12:29, what are you talking about? You have no idea of the situation. The co-op knows exactly what work we're doing, I simply decided it was rude to do it on a weekend. No one complained, it just was the right thing to do.
Maybe you should go call 311 about the jaywalkers on your corner...

Guest at 11:15 am here. I did my demo (w/ the demolition hammer) in a coop too, but it was on a weekday, so hopefully, I didn't disrupt my neighbors too much. (I didn't get any complaints.) It was pretty loud though (I'm sure a few things fell off the shelves at my downstairs neighbor!!). If you can swing it, take a day off work and try "shaking the building on a weekday. Good luck w/ your reno project.
