Art appraiser?

Art appraiser?

This painting was left to me. Im pretty sure its not of any value or importance but I wouldn't mind getting some information on it. I find it quite beautiful in a dark demented way and I wonder if there is any other information about it out there.

Does anyone know of a local company/person that might be able help?

I can't make out the artist's name in the signature the internet has been no help.

You can try sotheby's or christies for a free appraisel.
They are located in manhattan.

Sorry, all I can think is that is one of those "Shades of Light" pix by the mall artist Thomas Kinkead!

It needs a few happy, happy little clouds.

This is not an indictment of you or your taste since the painting was left to you, but, um, that painting is utter crap.

I have to agree with 3:47.
The frame is probably worth something.

It is so awful that I adore it.

Bad, but not bad enough too be good.

Sorry... It is not worth paying for an appraisal for insurance value and, honestly, you will be very embarrassed if you bring it to Christie's or "the other guys"...The can be very snide in a "we want to laugh at you but we won't" way. Trust me, this is great kitsch but not worth appraising.

Maybe there is an old master underneath.
Hey, it's happened.

Posted by: guest at December 13, 2007 4:47 PM

Toss it out. Or paint it white.

Guess no accounting for tastelessness.

This painting is simply lovely!

that is one of the tackiest paintings i have ever seen and that includes the stuff my aunt shirley's left me.
bring it to sotheby's by all means. those folks need a pick me up.

you see, if this were an old picture, the subject matter would have dictated a very somber and dark pallette. Very muddy and sinister. this may be a copy of such a victorian picture, which itself may not be worth much but at least something, except the painter used a very incongruous palette of pastel and flower colors. the piture makes no sense visually, it is the worst king of sofa art, burn it before it destroys your soul.

I remember reading in a back issue of ArtNews that this very painting was stolen from one of Saddam Hussein's Palaces. It must be returned to the good people of Iraq at once.

Thomas Kincade's assistant painted it for $7 an hour. But it looked better than most so he was fired.

This painting would look beautiful hung next to an illegal outlet.

Posted by: guest at December 14, 2007 8:19 AM

I'll pay you to burn it; so I guess it's worth less than zero.

Posted by: guest at December 14, 2007 9:44 AM

Why can't you just give the poster the info she requested. A qualified appraiser will tell her if it's crap or not. Who cares what the rest of you think.

God, I really am starting to loath this crowd. I can't believe the bitchiness is extending from the blog to the forum. Is nothing sacred?

10:34 Please lighten up. This thread is hilarious!

Wow, 24 posts and Ysabelle @ 11:04 is the only one who answered the question. Correctly, I might add.

As if these people can judge value by taste. One thing has nothing to do with the other. These are the people who by a fish tank filled with water and three basket balls for $300,000, have their arms folded and ADMIRE it, while the artist laughs his ass off. Bring it to a medium sized auction house -- maybe you'll get lucky.

People's snotty comments aside, it looks to me like Ukrainian folk art (girl's dress). It looks about 40-50 years old to me. The girl is afraid and there is a storm in the background, which makes me think it might have an anti-Soviet slant. These are just guesses, though. It is interesting and a little strange; hang it if you like it-- the above comments are mostly art-school, snarky and sophomoric.
