why no central vac?

Me again. Wondering why more people don't install central vac into their homes especially if they're doing a gut renovation? Would not be a great expense if that were the case.

Comments

I can't say the expense because I never looked into it. But Ill give you my reasons:
a) don't see a problem vacuuming my floors with a regular vacuum b) the idea of having all that dirt and other gunk lining the ducting of my house didn't appeal to me c) didn't want to add another hole to the walls

But Ive never had central vacuum so maybe Im missing out on something fabulous.

Honey, if a central vacuum system makes you happy, get one installed.

central vacuum systems are mostly a suburban thing. not one person looking to buy a house in the city backs out because there is no central vacuum system, not one.

I put a central vac in my brownstone during a major renovation. Not having to lug a vacuum up and down floors is great. What is even better is not having the exhaust go right back into the room (even if the filters are brand new Hepas, you still get some recycling of dust). Make sure you have outlets in several locations -- 2 per floor should do the trick unless your place is enormous or the walls make getting the hose where you want it tricky. There is a improvement that I saw -- a "VacPan" receptacle that goes in your kitchen and you sweep stuff into. Kind of an electrtic dustpan.

The NYT real estate section did an article on central vacs about a year, or two or three, ago. They claimed they cost about $1,000 to install. THat seems unrealistically cheap but maybe that was for new constriuction. that said, i have one in a house i own and i think they are FANTASTIC. the motor is ten times stronger than anything you can get in a regualr vacuum. including a dyson. (as you can see, I am a little obsessed with vacuum cleaners). i don't see how you put one in a brownstone, however, as the walls are solid. try a roomba instead. i just bought a reconditioned one on amazon. fantastic for the 1/2 hour it worked. sorry for punctuation--i do knwo better i just have a three year on my lap..
